Coil retainers?

Dang, I wish this was the den. This thread could get interesting. :D

I can't comment on the front, but I run retainers top and bottom on the rear coils. The upper retainer is a simple bolt through the tower with a spacer on each side. It's set so the coil can unseat about 2" before it catches.

I like them retained because of the little bit of unsprung weight. Feels like more of a controlled droop. I've been running the same coils in back since early '99 and haven't had a problem with the spings. Personally I think a XJ coil would have to be stretched out a long way to fatigue them enough to have problems. I have bent a few from over compression though.

You have rear coils?

Although I'm not real sure what effect it really has on the suspension, most of my EB buddies have built upper spring towers & unbolted them to be like us. They say they gain "flex" as the spring will hold up the axle like a limit strap would. We all know that there is a point of diminishing returns when it comes to flex, but where that point is? At least with long arms the tire will climb itself back out of a hole.

Of course I have those coily thingys in the rear, even with the rear swaybar on, I still need these..

And you want to wheel JV?

Rear coils are for TJs! :D

That's what they came out of. :D

You are getting old. You must have bitched at me for 10 minutes the first time you saw them. Moab 2001, Tera kit (coming off next month), making sure I boogger welded your nerfs on well enough.

When I was trying to see if I needed limiting straps, I used the highlift to raise a front corner of the Jeep to see how high I could go. Even with the coil unseated by about 2", the tire still had plenty of force keeping it on the ground. I think retaining the top of the coil will cause you to lose some useful droop. My plan is for limiting straps that take hold just before my shock is maxed out.

Hey, where are the bugger welds holding it together?

ROFLMAO! :laugh2:

Mark, unfortunately I had to PhotoChop them out of the photo for promotional reasons. I understand booger welds are a PUV signature, but I felt it would look a little too much like ORGS/PUV is flaunting their technical skills.

I'm sure URF Racing will soon (coinsidently) be introducing a similiar product to the market. And as we all know, with URF, quality is job 1. So I figured a little photo editing wouldn't hurt. Just steppin' out on the good foot!!

SPY PHOTO....

The all new ORGS/PUV CSR (Coil Spring
Retainer). Just the thing you need to keep
those pesky XJ upper coils in place....

LOL, thats sexy.

In all seems that although a carefully engineered and triangulated suspension would limit itself (as the stock system seems to do), such is not the case with a custom long arm suspension, so coil retainers and or limiting straps is the way to go. Crash, your smooth transition argument makes me go with my initial plan, coil retainers. Good thread.

AH, so long arms have a inherent problem?

:D :D :D :D :D

When wifey is TIGing, all is well.

It's when she sets me loose with the big MIG gun and a 12 pack that URF quality goes to hell.

You could say our quality control measures are somewhat suspect.

I dont know from first hand experience, just from what I have read here and the abundance of limiting straps.
