Clunking sound after Eagle Run trip...?

I love my BFG MudTerrains and they've lasted me forever, both on and ooff the trail. I picked them up for my last Jeep and daily drove it, then I daily drove this one for a good 5 months or so too. Even with the welded rear axle and all the wheeling trips They still have 66% of their tread on them. I've probably put a good 20,000 miles on them between the two Jeeps, plus I'd bought them used with about 10,000 miles on them.

I'm actually in the market for some 35's, once I get those I'll be posting my 32's for sale.

Do'nt forget to look for license plates too. :D

I'm with led, the popping combined with the steering wheel being "off" is a good indicator of a steering box bolt loosening up. I live a few blocks from you, Jonathon, if you want to swing by this evening I'll help you take a look at it and show you what you are looking for. PM me for address.

and BTW, my cooler survived unscathed... I guess its tougher thany your XJ!!:shhh:

....but wouldn't he have notice horrible driving and steering if the box was moving about, death wobble and such?

Steering wheel being off could be a bent tie rod or drag link.......throwing some other points/ideas out there, SurfXJsnow take XJGrin up on his offer and have him help you out on what to look for. :spin1: ......besides he is all out of bubble gum...............

Get the heep off the ground and check everything untill you locate the problem!! I would drive as little as possible till the problem is solved!!

well i got underneath and all i could find was one of my sway bar links was loose. not the part where it bolts to the body, but the part that goes to where the wheel is. I tried tightening the nut on the sway bar link and ended up breaking the link. now i dont have a front sway bar. Im going to get with XJ-Grin and see what he thinks.

Went to XJ Grins place and he found the culprit as i was turning the wheel side to side...

Its the Track Bar drop bracket. The bolts got loose and thats whats causing the POP sound when i turn the wheel.

Just went to tighten the loose bolt and it looks like the nut is stripped.

Should have gotten an adjustable track bar :bawl:

Run on over to the hardware store and get some grade 8 hardware in the same size with 2 lock washers, and tighten that bad boy back down!:wave1:

FrankZ sure knows how to set up an awesome OBA system. That York setup is just sweet. I've been reading writeups on it and would love to do something similar, but it seems a bit too involved for a weekend wrencher like me.

Glad to hear you ID'd the problem!

On Board Air

:jester:

Ahh... This will explain why i was in complete awe when I saw you in the Home Depot parking lot with air tools fixing someones rig.

If only i could afford...

Anyways, ended up getting the bolt out that came with the BDS Trac bar drop bracket. Those bolts and nuts arent worth a damn. The bolt ended up stripping inside the nut and took me about 3 hours to get it all out. Ended up breaking the damn thing. (if my trac bar bracket is held to the axle by a bolt that can just snap using a 3/8's drive ratchet then BDS needs to upgrade their hardwear). Went to the hardware store and picked up a grade 8 bolt, nut, and locking washers. Its snug and no more popping sounds!:yelclap:

I feel ya on that one Yella saved my butt as he noticed that mine was loose as well thank god I was at his house.............
