Cleaning OUTSIDE of fuel injectors...

Hey all. This is a stupid question. Im replacing the exhaust manifold on my 94 4.0. While I have the fuel rail out I want to clean things up a bit. The injectors have a good bit of crud on them I believe due to the valve cover leaking down on them alittle. Since the Jeep runs great Im pretty sure mechanically the injectors are good. But is it safe to spray the nozzles with some brake cleaner or carb cleaner??? Just to knock the crud out from below the o-rings.... If anyone has a better/safer solution to cleaning them up let me know. Thanks in advance.

P.S.... I must just be lucky. Every thread I read about removing the intake/exhaust manifolds made it out to be a PITA. Requiring extensions, swivel sockets and u-joints. Somehow I managed to get it all apart in about 15 minutes with just a 3/8 drive, 10 inch extention, and a socket. I was actually surpised at how easy it came out... Started to think I was missing something or did something wrong!

Yah - no trouble there. You can clean your fuel injectors with pretty much any light solvent of choice without any trouble. If the crud is really stuck on, B12 and an old toothbrush works wonders (I keep several around for cleaning softer parts.)

Since you've got it apart this far, you'll probably want to get new orings as well - at the dealer, the kit is something like $13-15.

You are lucky if you got the manifolds off that quick - I've done the job a few times with extensions, universal sockets, and choice expletives in about six languages. I think I'm going to be doing it again soon - I'll know while I've got my transmission jacked down for replacement (no point in doing the exhaust yet since I'll be taking it to bits this week-end anyhow...)

5-90 Thanks man. I ended up doing exactly like you said. Grabbed an old toothbrush and cleaned them up.

Yeah I have no idea how I did it so easily. I had the fuel rail off and everything disconnected. And the power steering pump off and to the side. That was it. its all back together now. New o-rings on the injectors as well. Fired up so fast it almost scared me! Plus it was running with just the manifold and no exhaust....my neighbors love me. On to finishing the floor repairs and fabricating the exhaust! Time to warm up the welder... Thanks again!
