CJ-7.....Stuff

I've read the directions on the autozone website, but i'm still skeptical. I've installed my 3" Rusty's lift by myself. Swapped a 231 in place of a 242. I'm young, but I have plenty of wrench hours. Should I leave this to someone else? Comments?

What exactly are you trying to change? the pump/res. itself or new pump to old mount brackets or...? if you are changing the actual pump and putting it into the res. can, be warned that you are going to most likely need to get your hands on a pulley remover/installer for this, since it is really easy to bend that pulley. I just went out and looked at the pump set-up on my '73 CJ 5, and you will need the remover tool any way, bacause of the bolt on the res. can at about the 7 o'clock postion, because it will not clear the pulley. All the other bolts are not an issue. While you have it apart, I would go ahead and change the res. can to pump body "O-ring" just to minimze the chance for future leaks from there. HTH, and sorry about being so long about it.

Definitely, if you're buying a new/rebuilt pump without the pulley on it, buy, rent or otherwise get your hands on the correct pulley remover. The pulleys are pressed on; the correct tool will work easily, but not much else will work at all.

I did one on a straight 6 Chevy PU maybe 10 years ago. (Thanks for the flashback  ) A CJ should be real similar, if not identical.

First I bought the pump & o-ring, then proceeded to make a mess of it all removing it...

Then used my shop press to destroy the old pulley. It ended up looking like a Pringles potato chip. :D but the sucker was still locked to that pump shaft.

Then spent a few hours scrounging the JYs for a pulley, bought one and it was the wrong offset. $15 and had the proper one at the GM dealer the next business day.

Then put it all back together and it was the damn reservoir leaking after all!

So the moral of the story is get the pump and reservoir as a unit (probably won't have the pulley on there) also have the pulley puller/installer or know where to get it off & remounted somewhere local. (maybe at the parts store?) Line wrenches will be your friend, as well as having more PS fluid that you think you'll need.

I didn't break any bolts off in the block or head, but in hindsight, hitting them with a shot of PB Blaster the day before might have been a safer play.

Good luck with the project and the mission.
