Here's an update, went to NAPA's Louisville wharehouse, they had 4 hub and rotors, three made in china, one in the U.S. just for kicks we tried the hub in all four.....it only fit the Made in the USA one.

I think that the blame it on China schtick gets old after a while. It is the nature of capitalist industrailization to maximize profit by whatever means possible. It could take the form of reducing labor costs or reducing production costs. A person who equates nationality with product superiority is shortsighted. For example, look at the Big-3 autmanufacturers in the 70's and 80's. For crying out loud, their response to Japanese wuality was the Pinto! Numerous other examples can be seen. Of course, the massive amount of disposable income and the ease with which we buy on credit isnot an incentive for any company to invest in a high quality product. WH produce something that is not goign to encourage profitabiity. Remember, the high end market is a limited one.

As Gil said, sometimes cheap tools have their place. Typically when the tool becomes the expendable crew member to the goal.

I live out in the country, driving into town is a 45 minute ordeal (one way). I don't buy cheap tools anymore.

where i worked over summer, (http://www.central-automotive.net) there were 4 mechanics, 2 of them used exclusively Mac, Matco, and Snap-on tools...

2 of them had a grab bag mix of the 3 and craftsman...

one of thoes two got fired, and the otherone is exclusively buying snap-on now...

I made weekly runs to Sears with buckets of tools - it was kinda fun to dump out the bucket on the counter.

You get what you pay for. If it is something I plan on keeping a while I'll pay the extra $$$$.

It's virtually impossible to find any electronic goods that are NOT made in China. My Toshiba laptop, Fuji digital camera, Sharp TV, and Panasonic DVD player are all made in China. If you can find anything still made in Japan, buy it.

Also, on a related note, I went clothes shopping a couple of weeks ago. Came home with a pair of Vietnam-made Nikes and a pair of Bangladesh-made Levis. :laugh3:

Story time:

When was Gorbachev and perestroika and all that? Anyway, about that time my folks went on a tour of Russian hospitals. My mom was a nurse so the whole trip was a write-off.

Short version - They're standing on the street in Kiev watching the May Day Parade when a Russian walks up to my Dad and points at the camera around Dad's neck. "Americanski?" (or what ever the Russian would be). My Dad turns the camera over and points to the label on the bottom. "Japan." "Ahh," says the Russian, flipping over his own camera. "Yugoslavia." My Dad turns out his shirt collar. "Taiwan." The Russian follows suit. "Romania."

Turns out, neither of them had anything on their persons that was made in their own country. Go figure.

Very funny! No, not communist. However, the Catholic comment, although meant in jest is fairly perceptive. I find myself in much agreement with their mixture of a conservative moral philosophy and its expression in social consciousness.
Don't hear me saying that I do not think it is wise to buy a high quality product. I am just saying that economic structures do not encourage that. Furthermore, it is blind nationalism to de facto assume that not only does "American Made" mean better quality but also that "American Made" mean "American Made."
