Ok, i'm lookin at a 97 2500 w/ the 6.5td.

What are some of your expirences with these motors. I know they aint quite a Dmax or cummins or powerstroke, so we dont really need to there.

Just looking for people who have owned them who can give an honest review.

thanks,

I had a 1996 3/4 ton suburban with the 6.5 TD V-8. '96 was the first year of the newer Diesel, which raised power to 190 hp, and more importantly 430 lb/ft of torque. I had it from 25k miles to 165k, and never had a motor problem. I had some other assorted electrical problems and GM build quality issues, but by and large, I loved that truck. It got 16-18 mpg in most situations, towed great, and had adequete power for most things.

It did surprisingly well off road, too. Nothing real crazy, mind you, but with the factory posi-traction, it did pretty well. I crossed a lot of off-road mountain passes in Colorado in that thing. At high altitudes like Colorado it was great becuase of the turbo, so it never suffered power losses due to thin air. I have a lot of fond memories of that truck (she was named "Grace"). Don't be afriad to try it out.

P.S. How do you like the Goat? I've been toying with picking one up for about a year now. I saw a 2004 Silver/Red 6-spd with 6,000 miles I could have bought for about $23,500...seemed like a whole lot of car for the money! Of course with the 6.0 Liter out now....

thanks for your honest review. thats the kinda stuff i'm looking for.

As for the goat, its a sick car. And is a ton of car for the $$$. Mine is actually for sale right now. In part to finance a truck purchase, i just dont really need a car right now, as much as i need a truck if you know what i mean. As mine stands right now, I can run neck to neck w/ 05 GTO's and slowly get walked by 05 Vettes, and can walk all over C5 vettes that are stock/light mods.

This is my for sale post on LS1gto.com

BTW. that $ figure can be totally massaged for a NAXJA member.

I have a '97 6.5 K2500 GMC Suburban. I bought it at 76k miles, it currently has 126k. I've replaced tires, alternator, vacuum pump, most of the AC system, fan clutch, and the engine oil cooler and lines. The injection pump was replaced under warranty, but I had to refurbish the fuel system in order to qualify (new fuel filter, lift pump, pickup screen, and cleaned fuel tank.)

I've been pretty happy with it, but like any vehicle it has its issues that an informed consumer can deal with. I learned alot at www.gm-diesel.com and www.thedieselplace.com
