What brand should i look for. I am not needing anything setup for long range just for the trail and the occasional interstate trip and NOAA channels

Whatever you get keep in mind that the antenna is the most important part.

A dirt cheap wal mart cb (like i have) with an excellent antenna will be better than the top of the line cb from anywhere with a crappy antenna.

Radio shack imho, has the best antennas.

Radio Shack mostly has junk for antennas and for coax cable. Get a Wilson or Firestik antenna if you want something that will perform well and last a long time. Try www.walcottcb.com or a Truck Stop.

I agree Wilson and Firestick are great. Firestick is easily tuneable if you get the firestick II. But, I recently got a Francis Hotrod and I love it. Factory tuned with spring and the wire is molded into the inside of the rod. I don't know about you guys but my firestick was beat to hell with all the trees in the Northwest. My SWR with the Francis + Spring and no tuning is 1.5 on ch1 and below 1 on ch 40.

I wanted one for awhile, but never found one.. I had to go to a truck stop to buy one.. Got one that came with the antenna an all.. Plug and go.. Dam thing works great... But it wasn't cheap, cost was almost 100 bucks.. This was after driving all over to find one..

Go to the nearest truckstop [I bought mine at a pilot] .
I got complete setup for under 50.00
works great.

Good luck Nick

i got a Cobra 19 ultra III at walmart for 35 bucks. Thats all i need. now i may have to hit up a pilot soon. Do they carry those Francis Hotrod antennas

Yeah your have all kind of choices at any truckstop. I prefer the cheapest.

I have broke several while wheeling. Damn tree limbs.
