It looks like Cascade CB is gone from Lynnwood. I've heard of another guy in Arlington but not a name. Any one have a recommendation?

What do you need?

There used to be a CB shop in Mt Vernon, just West of I-5 and just South of Down town (I can't remember the name either).

This might bring up a good subject. Most people have never "tuned" their CB's and I know there are several people on this board that have the equipment to do that. We should organize that assistance for an event like NW Fest or Noobfest or similar?

My neighbor has all the equipment and did mine for me. He's really into CB's I'll ask him if he has any local recomendations.

That would probably be great, you mean tuning the antenna to fit the cb right Michael? I still need to do mine.

Yes, That is what I mean. I haven't done mine either and I am sure most of us haven't.

What I need:

1. An education in the proper use of the thing. Squelch and gain are pretty much meaningless to me.

2. An assessment of my system and my need to have the antenna down so I can park in the garage. ( the spring works well but I am worried I am loosing my signal due to it.. Possibly there is an antenna mount that can be ratcheted up and down with no signal degradation?)

3.I seriously think my CB is toast after the way it behaved on the Tinkham run. So a replacement needs to be researched.

4. Tuning is also on the list. Once the system is modified to work...

i have connections for all things radio related from purchasing to antenna tunning, from tuning the radio itself and related component such as mikes, coax antenna etc... installs are also available.

I can probably help you out with how to use it, I would have to see it to make sure I understand which buttons are for which, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

My experience on anntenna's is that there are several different ways that antennas connect to the cable. The cable between the CB and the antenna is a coax? (I believe that is the correct term for two wires, 1 inside the other, protected by a liner). The best connection is a mating Coax connection on the end of the antenna. The alternative requires that you ground 1 strand of the cable and connect the other to the end of the antenna. I have had nothing but issues with the second option and don't recommend them. I can't remember which you have with your spring/whip?

The other thing is that useing your antenna at an angle to your roof/hood probably isn't optimum either.

Or the cable should come in specific lengths (can't remember which lengths are best) and the extra should be coiled? but in a specific way?

I know there has been several conversations on the tech forum that might also help you out.

1) it is indeed called coax cable. somtimes refered to as coaxial cable.

2) yup, only 2 ways i can think of to connect coax to an antenna. you should see the connectors for heliax

3) in not sure what is meant by "at an angle to your roof or hood"

4) it doesnt matter. run what fits.

if you want you can visit http://www.nwcbradio.com/ there is a forum on the left side ware it says trucker slang, cb mods, 10-13 codes (13 codes are hilarious.) at the bottom of that area will be a forum tab, that will take you to the forums and there you can ask any question you like. if your lucky "boomhauer" the DC sky champ will answer. but there are alot of folks there that are very knolageable. i am junior there and though i dont post much (cause i talk to them on the radio on a day to day basis) i sandbag alot.

keep an eye on the for sale section. ill have coax and ends up soon as well as radios and antennas in the future.

This is a great idea BUT correct me if I'm wrong, juniorXJ, you have to be in an open area (ie no trees or what not) to get an accurate tune. Kinda hard at Naches.

Hey if the NWHBC (Ba Reado you can come too) wants to get together and tune CBs, let me know, I have the tuning equipment. I need to redo my coax since it got crimped at Evans. (so you know how long ago that must have been ;) )

And Tracy if you don't tune your cb, in extreme situations you can smoke the "finals". Which may be what is wrong with yours. If you want any ideas for a good CB for a XJ look into Cobra 75 WX st.

"at an angle to your roof". He has the antenna "folded" down so it is at a 45deg to the roof/hood, should work, but not optimum.

It does matter, apparantly there are specific lengths (some better than others) that a CB cable should be. Meaning you shouldn't cut the CB cable down to fit your application. And apparantly it should be coiled in a specific way. I am not an expert but I know that I have read several good conversations on the subject.

Hans,
Wonderful idea. how big of an open area do you need?

I think the answer is 18 ft. IIRC

No sure of how big an area.

Here is a great web site to answer most of your CB questions.

Funny enough, they sell those at Sportsmans.:farmer:

Of course they do, for people just like you :D

I will have to do more research again in the cable length because I need to put a Cobra in the Ex and will check the details again. Not sure yet what antenna I am going to put on it, I am really happy with the Wilson on the Jeep, but I might do a more traditional Firstick or similar on the Ex.

If it were really for people like me there wouldnt have been the "DO NOT Microwave your ammunition" warning in the instructions.:confused1

I am going to get another Cobra 75 Wx. If you are interested I can buy a second one or third one next time I am down in Oregon (tax free, I know there is a reason that I like OR :kissyou: )

And we can do a install party at my place. Of course I don't have much of an open area, but we could go down the street to the rock quary area, there is some room there?
