Cash for clunkers and other deals

I know this subject has beat to death (pun intended), and I am not of fan of killing good parts vehicles, especially XJs (the toys can go as far I am concerned), but if anyone here in Texas is looking to trade in and get a new set of wheels you might want to read on. I am condoning doing this with your XJ (WE WILL WATCHING YOU! LOL) but if some other used, POS clunker and you are thinking of trading it in the CFC deal read on.

I heard today on fox news that it is $3500 for a 4 mpg upgrade, and $4500 for a 10 mpg upgrade on CFC.

Also there is an extra $1700 federal tax credit if you buy a Ford Hybrid in the deal. In fact all the hybrids seem to have extra federal tax credit incentives. See below.

Then if you live in Texas there is another another $3500 kicked in from the Texas "drive a clean machine" program, that funds replacing clunkers (like oil burners) with a more energy efficient, cleaner exhaust vehicles.

Here is a LINK to the Faux news where I saw this.

With $9700 in cash, plus dealer/OEM offers, plus in Texas there is a large sales tax on the new car purchase, that is deductable on federal income taxes (according to the article), I am starting to wonder if the days of shopping for used CHEAP used XJs (or other cheap used car) in Texas may not be over for a while. For some that want a new high mileage set of DD or work wheels, this is going to be one sweet deal, deal of life time from the looks of it.

On the other hand, I am pretty sure that many Xjs will escape the chopping block, as not every XJ owner is going to buy a new POS, and take on payments, extra insurance costs, and so on, and not every XJ out there would qualify from some of what I read, as it needs to be running, registered, already in their name for close to a year, etc, or something like that.
Long story short, if you are already planning to do the CFC deal don't miss out on the other great incentives. Seems many dealers don't even know about some of these, as they are income tax rebates, deductions, and state based, TCEQ deals.

Yeah, I thought about taking the FSJ in, but I couldn't bare the thought of it being crushed. The flip side is that I've also been shopping for a CHEAP XJ in drivable condition and I'm not finding them the way I use to.

I truly love our government....stimulate the economy by having us put ourselves even further in debt when we cannot afford to pay our bills now!

Oh, hey Mike check out this video

Mischiefman, if I wasn't unemployed with 2 jeeps already I woulda made you an offer on that FSJ some time ago :(
Please don't crush it...

Back on topic, I think "cash for clunkers" is a very inaccurate and misleading title. "cash for guzzlers" would much more accurate, since the qualification criteria have everything to do with gas milage and nothing to do with the condition of the vehicle, as long as it is road-legal. There are an awful lot of beat-up old cars, many borderline unsafe(some VERY unsafe!) , that do not qualify because they still get decent milage.

All the good ones seem to be on the west or east coast these days.

Glad to hear your hanging on to it. Their aren't many left. I have seen only 3, all in pristeen condition, still being used, here in Houston. Spotted 3 of them in the last 2 years. One lives in my neck of the woods. Ran into him at the local AZ, on his way out of town to go fishing one weekend.

The few drivable Xjs are not cheap, and the others need too much work to be a quick DD fix.
