So for the last week ive had nothin but trouble with my front axle. Busted an axle seal so I pull the axles drain the diff start pulling my carrier out only to find a cracked taper sleeve... so I put the new seals in put new taper sleeves in and the jeep starts driving funny on the way home from browns.. which left me thinking one thing... it was my differential bearings themselves. So I came home last night pulled it all apart put the new bearings on with the same shimming on both sides and im getting the same noises out of the front as I was before. Any ideas what might have happened???

And this is her put all back together.

Did you check the backlash and do a pattern check after replacing the bearings?

You shouldn't have to check back lash. But what kind of noise does it make? And did you install the bearing caps the same way you took them off?

I asked because on my cj I marked the caps but put them on backwards, it made the worst howling noise. I put um right and all is good

Never checked the backlash because everyone said the shimming was the same and it wouldnt change. And its more of a romp noise not too loud but enough for me to hear it and have it bother me. And yes I center punched both sides to make sure I got them right.

Remove your rear shaft, lift and support your front end, place in 4hi and listen to the front end. It may not be the diff. It may be a wheel bearing assembly.

Will a wheel bearing make the jeep jump while turning in 4 wheel drive?? Because it turns just fine in 2 wheel the second I put it in 4 wheel like and it engages the thing jumps like no other...

Alright update fellas jacked up the jeep couldnt tell where the noise was coming from at first too much echoing so I dropped the front and left the rear up and the noise is definitely coming out of the front end which explains the jumping. Gonna find a cheap place to have my gears re meshed I personally dont know a thing about it. Itll be nice to watch and learn though.

That's normal in four wheel drive. It's most noticeable on pavement since one tire is trying to turn faster than the other and can't slip.

Carrier bearings do not effect turning.

This is more noticeable tham the normal jump it does.

Was the wheel bearing assembly. Got her all quiet again. And as far as the jumoing in 4 wheel drive its mysteriously stopped jumping like it did. Back to the normal tug and jerk it does.
