Cargo area= bed

I sleep in the back of mine and i'm 5'9" its a little cramped but its comfortable with an air mattress

i used to jeep sleep, BUT i hate unloading my stuff from the hatch, finding a place to put it, then like everyone else said being cramped up to sleep in it, ALSO you gotta look at most of the time every window in ur jeep will collect moisture. keep in mind you WILL have to cuddle lol theres not alot of room in the xj for 2 people side by side, its like sleeping on a twin bed. my tent takes less than 10 minutes to put up, i can keep all my valubles locked in the jeep, for me i gotta keep the ice chest locked in the jeep cuz bears will smell the food... so overall its easier to tent sleep, =) i found a coleman 10x10 tent yesterday at big 5 for 69 dollars regularly 109, with a full rain fly... its pretty decent deal to say the least

You may want to rethink that.
Bears can easily tear doors off. That is why it is illegal to store food in cars in Yosemite.

well while the bear is tearing off my door to my jeep i'll be thinking of the brighter side lol... i dont have to tear em off to make half doors now, or... its easier to load my gun and take a head shot at the bear and hopefully kill it =/... i figure if i kill that bear it will prevent someone else from getting their car destroyed or someone getting hurt right?

You can pickup a factory Jeep tailgate tent on ebay for around $200 to $250.

Didn't read if it's been discussed, but look into running 2dr XJ folding front seats. If you removed the center console and added the folding fronts, it may be comfortable. I've slept in my XJ a few times and it's quite uncomfortable.

So how about taking some of the wire that is used in electic -with battery powered remote-cattle/horse fences and just running it around your vehicle and wait...........................BAM!!!
the fuggin yogi bear will learn real quick to not go near cars anymore!!!!:laugh3:

I'm thinking of building enclosure for the back. Have a floor that flips out and walls that snap from the floor to the hatch.
I've had a similar thing bouncing around in my head lately. Was thinking about supporting the floor from the hitch. Not exactly sure how, but haven't tried very hard to figure it out yet.

I've been thinking of doing something along these lines myself. Its not so much the width that the gf and I have troubles with its the fact that unless I'm diagonal, I can't stretch out. If you do attempt this, please post a write up or something.

I'm really thinking about it. I was thinking of having a hinge system, and a cable that strings from the corners of the platform, to the rear pillars.

It would be easy to do and make it work. But much more design work would go into something you can remove easily and folds up in an unobtrusive way when not used.

I've got a few ideas assuming a hinge or hook in the bed.:
1) solid plank thats shorter and folds back into the bed. Pro: simple Con: You have to remove everything in the back to deploy.
2) hinged in the center and folds in half. Pro: saves space and can function like a pickup truck tailgate Con: more difficult to make and more difficult to make durable, blocks bed access
3) hinged in the center and detaches form the bed and attaches to the hatch. Pro:full bed access, most finished seeming design. Con: blocks tailgate speakers, weight may be an issue for hatch struts, hardest to design.

I'm 6'4 and have slept pretty well in my 89.
The keys to it are:
Remove the rear seat cusion and fold the back flat.
Push the front seat all the way up and fold it foward(not possible if you have a four door, the four door seats don't fold foward like the two door front seats)Put your head at the hatch end and let your feet rest on the back of the folded front seat.
I have foam work out mat that I got at wally world and cut to fit the cargo area.Really helps insulate and pad the steel floor.
I'll throw pics up soon.....

This is how I've done it, works pretty well. Assume you're drunk if it's a camping trip, you'll sleep even better.

I used metal plate for the floor. I got rid of the seat completely. Made an angle iron frame that bolts to the floor behind the front seats.

Then bolted the plate to the frame & where the seat back bolted in.

I keep spare axle shafts & recovery gear underneath. JIM.

it might have already been mentioned but remove the lower half of the seat put the front seats all the way forward and sleep corner to corner(im bout 5'9") and i can be stretched out....a 3inch foamy helps with the hard floor the girl can have the left over space and most of the time they will take it over sleepin outside on the ground in a tent:D

the jeep is very sleepable if your under 6' i dont do tenting

illxj some thing like that but with wood that is what I think I will do for now. Then improve it later to something like chainer is talking about. Looks like a great set up I will have to copy later.

There is something very similar to this already on the market, i'll see if i can find it.

Yea Ive seen this done as well and i like the setup.

Theres also a guy who makes a mini fold out tent that you mount on the roof and you basically just fold it up. bad part is it costs abt 900 big ones( way too much IMO). my dad and i are testing out the larger version on our Suburban right now for the guy. its real slick comes with a ladder and all. almost might be worth it to build your own.

ill see if i can find a pic.

At 6' its definitely scrunched i had to sleep diagonally to be comfortable.

I thought of another way to mount the platform. I have to build a rear bumper and I could have it bolted to the bumper and fold up against the hatch. I would just flip it down to open the hatch.
