Can i use a roof top tent anywhere.if i was driving cross country and stopped at a rest stop could i pop it up there and sleep or in a parking lot somewhere. or is it only allowed on private property?

lol.

i kinda went through this.

i hear wal-marts welcome campers, but dont quote me on that.

truckers sleep in thier trucks at rest stops and in parking lots all the time.

I slept in my jeep in random places on my cross country trip. Nobody hassled us. we just looked for large/deserted parking lots.

i am a trucker. they don't care because the we have to stop after so long of driving. but we can't just park anywhere. didn't know if i could stop on a back road and setup camp?

well i'm human and need to stop after so long of driving as well.

anyway there might be laws. they probably vary by state. i just found a nice parking lot and laid down in the back

You'll find that most TP pulloff's have restrictions on overnighting. Usually a few hour time limit on parking.

Truck stops are noisy.. you wont get much sleep with idling diesels and lot lizards looking for a snack.

Walmarts allow campers overnight in most locality's, but some towns restrict it. You'll need to check with the store manager if you dont see other RV's in the lot.

Check for state and national forests along your route. This is your best bet to pull in and find dispersed camping.

I have also read that Troopers are pretty accomodating, allowing people with small footprints to park in the back lots.

Do a google search on Boondocking.. you'll find more info/ideas.

Where are you heading?

This would have been a good thread for the Adventure Forum....

walmart no longer allows overnight camping except to OTR truckers, unless posted. as far as rest stops there will be obvious posted signs saying that the lot is patrolled all night by staties and overnight stopping is ok but be prepared for the cops to knock on your window.....I have driven cross country a dozen or so times and let's just say if you stay at the ones that aren't patrolled you are taking a pretty big risk

the times we just slept in the jeeps we found malls in nice neighborhoods or on the weekends office building parking lots.

never got bothered but one nigh we parked near a popular restaurant serving breakfast. lol

i'm not going anywhere yet still trying to show my wife that the tent is worth the money. i was looking for the adventure forum when i was going to ask must have missed it since the new layout. you have the roof top tent right.i know at the Jeff Daniels you had a trailer with one which you sold to your friend if i remember right.

if it was up to me i would drive till i was ready to pass out. which from plowing for penn dot is about 40 hours then a the noise wouldn't be a problem. but the wife can only take so much.

I've never met you or your wife but I'm pretty sure saying "hey baby, we can use it to sleep in the walmart parking lot!!!!" probably isn't going to be the convincing she needs

That was my buds trailer with my gear on it. I was storing it for him and used it at NAC-Fest and did the few Jeep shows last summer. I wasnt in position to purchase when he needed to sell. I have my own trailer project that has not gotten the attention i'd like.

Replied to your PM.

For some of us those idling engines are like a sweet lullaby, haha. But seriously, I would think you'd be okay overnight in a well lit roadside rest area. As mentioned earlier, for safety reasons, go with the actively patrolled areas. Road trips like that are the best.
