first off if the MODS feel this is not advanced fab please feel free to move it.

i have a buddy who wants me to build a cage for him in his explorer, which i have no problem with i've done quite a few cages. the problem is his explorer is on rockwells and since those are some heavy axles i'm kind of lost at what tubing to go with. he was going to go purchase some 1.5 .120 wall and some 1.75 .120 wall DOM for this.

here's my question. if you were running rockwells what tubing would you use or recommend?

just looking to see what others think is all....thanks.

i was thinking the same thing.

here's your scientific picture :) this was taken before the suspension was tweaked a little.

If its just wheeling and the occasional flop I'd do 1.75 x .120 wall. Maybe do the main portion (b pillar hoop and a pillar) out of 2 x .120 wall for overkill.

Generally speaking, most cages are now being build with a min. of 1.75" and 120 DOM.
I've seen some hard rolls with 1.5" hot rolled and (with a good design) they didn't have any bar crush. I think its more about the design than anything else.
I'd bet you would be good with the 1.75 and DOM.

I think if that rig flops with rockwells under it the weight would crush it.
That said, I think 1.75 or 2". Probably wouldn
t do 1.5 unless there is a lot of cross bracing.

I thought I read somewhere that rockwells with the wheel brakes stripped off of them aren't much more than Dana 60/70s? Either way I stand by what I said.

That's an IFS Rockwell, right?
didn't know they had and IFS one. it looks like a normal rockwell to me :dunno:

thanks guys! i was thinking if i went with 1.75 and good triangulation it would be ok, he wants it an internal cage so i'm thinking one really good roll and he'll be building something else anyway.
