Thanks Doug. I couldn't remember. Doesn't it also tie into his rocker replacements as well? And yes, his looks really good. I like how tight it is to the body. That was a job well done for sure.

yes it does, his rocker replacement is not only welded to the surrounding metal is is braced back to the unibody channel.. IMO this is why this is the strngest way to build an xj cage the entire body is braced and the rocker replacements are a great tie in to the unibody that has a lot more surface welded to the frame than just slugging the cage through the floor and to the frame channel

i like tims the best because he tied it into the rear and front bumper.

rear light protection is a must if you ride like anyone here... ehmmm

plus the other ones just end at the back and it looks funny

but i like the hybrids alot better because of the extra room you get to keep while inside the vehicle.

As far as strengthening the unibody, replacing the rockers and tying it back to the "frame" rail with boatsides or something similar is the best way IMO.

Have you guys seen the C-Rok exo? http://www.c-rok.com/ec.html It's already bent and ready for welding. I would think adding a roof tie in and maybe a support or two inside would make is pretty stout. I am more for the hybrid but for hte sheer amount of work that would be reduced it might be worth it.

What do you think?

I'll take some credit for that creation. When we did Tims cage, there were also supports installed between the rockers spanning from one side to the other. Thats what the b-pillar supports are welded to and then they are triangulated. That was a hell of alot of work for a weekend.

I agree, Hybrid FTW! I am doing a rocker replacement this weekend and a front exo cage, so it should be cool. He wants body protection, so the tubes will be outside the fenders on the front. Later on when more funds are available, there will be a hybrid cage similar to tims (more exo and more pillar braces since its a 4 door). It should be pretty cool!

How much tube should I get ? I was thinking 200 feet of 1 1/2 .120 DOM
Where is the best place to get it ?

Tim's are 1.5" I believe. Are you gonna do real DOM or Welded Seam Wall? Just wondering, that size DOM will most likely be around $5-6 a foot. That would be $1200 for just the tubing... I would just get the seam wall. The strength difference isn't worth the price increase IMO. If you roll it hard enough to mess up a well designed cage built from WSW tube, then chances are you are dead anyway.

my junk is hrew..... i trust it, built right id build a b uggy out of hrew

yeah.... id atleast do most of the support pieces in dom and the rest in hrew.... my entire cage is dom. as well as my rocker tubes... as i have dented the crap outta some hrew

Well, hrew has worked fine for me... I have 2" sliders made from them, and I have barely dented them even when coming down hard on it. I guess it's just that I don't have a ton of money (been spending it on tools lately) so I just go with a high quality but economic decision. That means hrew unless its a link and needs a rod insert put into it. I always build suspension out of DOM, but cages and sliders are hrew.

DOM, and only DOM IMHO. Basically I think of it this way. If my life has to depend on it I want it out of the most reliable material available. That is why suspension parts, steering parts and cage's on my rigs so far have all been DOM.
