internals of an np 231 are stronger than the stock d300 so the 241 is certainly beefier than the d300 , but you can't front did with chain drive .

There's a low miles perfect shape 241j on CL for $300 ...keep in mind the 241j is not the 241 roctrac with 4-1 it is still the 2-72 gear option .

Incorrect. The 241J is the Roctrac. Jeep just didn't get around to the fancy name for the first year or two. The tag from New Process is 241J, and I guar-an-tee it's a 4-1. I've been driving it for 14 years now. It's from the second year of production. I'm not really looking to sell, but I'd like 2-lo, and I need to change out the original front yoke, which is 1330, to 1310 so I can get some castor back.

I was pretty clear that my transfer case from 2002 which has a 241J tag just like the above is the same internally, not externally, as the Roctrac, ie, it is a 4 to 1. That it may have changed later on, which the post addresses, makes no differences. I guess I should have said, "My 241J is the same as the Roctrac." Pettifogging.
