Big Red's JV Run

Phil said:
Ok, I can't sit and watch this anymore. Troy, I know you want to wheel. Hell, I spend way too much time looking at run pictures myself. But there's more to being ready to run JV than a built rig. If I tried running JV now in Goatman's rig, or Jes', or Crash's, or Porch Puppy's, or Paul S', or SeanP's, or...(you get the point?), I'd fail horribly. I'm going to hang out up here, on my local trails, and get seat time. If the guys who run JV decide I know what I'm doing AND my rig is ready, I may consider heading down for a run. Until then, I'm going to have fun where I can.

I suggest you do the same.

And please, oh dear god please, don't post so much. We get it. Like Brett's front leaf springs and Toy 8", we get it.

Thanks Phil. Alright, I'll cool it on JV, I hope to wheel with U soon on the snow runs locally. Sorry I missed the last 3 runs, the 1st 1 I was there, but my radiator blew as U know. The 2nd 2 I was out of town. U know Bowman/Malokoff really good, want to run it soon in a month or so? Later man.

Well said Phil. I guess it only took 6 pages to finally get that point across.

What an entertaining thread. I'm stuck on graveyard and have been laughing at the exchange.

Troy if you have just fixed up your rig don't be so anxious to break it...learn your limitations. If these guys are telling you to hold off, listen to them. Work up to doing the JV run.

Remember, you didn't know when to stop crossing that creek last May on the Lost Coast run and you ended up drowning your wifes Grand Cherokee. Know your limitations!!!

Thanks for keeping me awake.

EXACTLY! You see, Troy, no one wants to come right out and say it, but we've been giving pretty damn good hints. We go to JV becuase it is fun wheeling. We work like crazy (and sometimes spend like crazy too) so we can go and not break down. We mostly don't like running with large groups or with people we don't know because we want to wheel, not sit around on the trail waiting for people who either break or don't know how to drive......and there is a lot of opportunity out there for both.

When we think someone is ready, we'll invite them. Now, there is some latitude there, we're not an elite bunch of snobs, and we want new people to go, we just want to be somewhat comfortable that they're ready for it. If someone who has never gone before makes an attempt to set up a run, you won't get any response from us....we're not going to bite. I can't say it any planer than that. You get your rig built, get some seat time in it, quit being a baby on the forums so people want to be around you, and you will likely get what you are wanting. If you haven't picked up on it yet, folks around here sort of make fun of mostly webwheelers (SeanP is a good example :)), and you defintely qualify, whether you like it or not, since you post so damn much all the time, and say the same things over and over so damn often.......and also because you post specs in you sig that you haven't even done to your rig yet (get rid of that, would you?).

Step back, and be patient enough to build up to this stuff........just like all the rest of us have done. And for heaven's sake quit posting so much!! Do yourself (and us) a favor and count the number of posts you have in threads that you participate in and try to stay close to the same numbers as others who are posting in the same thread.

You are a young man, much younger than I am, you have plenty of wheeling years ahead of you. Relax.

Yeah, that 1 really sucked. I ended up blowing my tranny on that 1. Very little to nothing was open that weekend when I sunk my zj and the ride back home with some water in my tranny ruined it. I wish I had brought my tools, I would have drained the tranny in the hotel parking lot if I had to.

$3K later I was back on the road and it has been a on road only jeep ever since. The run was fun though. I'm thinking of doing it again, with the zj, but this time no water. My wife was a real trooper through that ordeal, it was our 5th year anniversary that weekend to. :)

Thanks Richard. I'll chill out. I always take your words to heart. I put the mods in my sig so hopefully people know that I have a rig worthy of going, now its just me that has to get to that level

Troy,

One question: All the mods you are undertaking suspension and axle-wise, are you doing any of it yourself? That way if something breaks you know how to fix it? 'Cause if not, that is another issue that needs to be dealt with as well.

Build it, don't buy it! I have to agree with mike (not a jab at Troy, but a general agreement).

I'm hoping by going with alloy 35 spline 9" axles, front 4340 hp44 axle shafts with OX joints. detroits f/r, etc etc. No I haven't broke any axle part yet with my hp30/44, but wanted to be more sure not to by going with my hp44/9". I know I wouldn't be able to come close to what Ryan has done to build the axles etc and have any confidence if I did it right for it to hold up. But yet I can fix susp and have installed both the axles I previously had the hp30/44 myself. So I have put alot of work into my jeep(s). Just I know my limitations and don't do stuff I know I cannot do. And as I said ealier, by the time U buy the stuff to install the gears and lockers, you have to use it more than a couple times to get your $ out of it, especially since I'm getting the axles geared and locked for $125-150 which is very cheap. Many shops here in Sacramento want $500 and axle to do that. For the amount of stuff I bought and am having assembled I have done good. :)

The statement "build it, don't buy it" is great if U have all the tools, time, etc etc but not for everyone. I live in a gated townhouse community and I get dirty looks and have to hide my jeeps in my garage even when I want to do a simple oil change. I have thus far installed both of my previous axles, made susp mods, herculined 7 jeep interiors, 1 ext my current 91' XJ etc etc. I bought my current XJ fairly built with 5.5" RE X-duty lift with the winch, 35" mtrs, and hp30/8.25 open with 4.56 gears, then went to hp30 with arb 4.56/xj 44 with detroit 4.56, and now U can see the axles I have and the goodies in them in my signature. I got good deals along the way and spent much less $ and time on my jeep then if I would have bought the jeep bone stock and bought all the parts I have now and get it assembled. I agree that U can buy a stock or lightly moded vehicle and then build it the way U want, that's what I tried but I had a good headstart when I bought it too.

actually Andy, you're currently leading Troy in posts per day 2.72 vs 2.71

we won't talk about the fact that i have a little over 3 a day ;)

Nice stats Brett. I'll try to keep my posts more relevant and also keep up my average of almost 3 posts a day. I actually have alot more posts lately, I just started very slow when I found this site in Illinois and wasn't on it alot, so don't hold that against me. :laugh3:

you should try and play a little game; make just 1 post per day. Instead of writing 10 a day, you can spend all that time coming up with the perfect, most concise one post. I'd be impressed. I'd even up your rep.

At least he's not up to 6.90 posts per day like some Polish people we know.

I'll work on making more relevant posts, sorry I cannot commit to just 1, it's not substantial enough. Especially when people ask me questions on the threads, I have to respond. If people would pm me more, I'd do the same.

I make many of my posts for the enjoyment of others. As long as people are having fun, then I'm :)

Keitar is my idol with a 6.9 post avg a day, now that's just impressive. :laugh3:

Troy, please do us all a favor and read Richard's post about 20 more times. There are some very good suggestions in there. Live and learn is the way most people live their life. Remember live and learn, please don't just go chalk this thread up as people bashing you for fun. Yeah, it got out of hand, but I think the overall message was sincere. It could not be any clearer what people are asking of you. Practice some restraint, and just calm down. Please do me a favor and read Richard's post each and everytime you sign into NAXJA. Maybe post that as your signature untill your Jeep gets done. Learn from it, and then act accordingly. Believe me, the Sierra Chapter members wish this whole situation would just resolve itself. We are frustrated beyond belief. The solution starts with you listening to the advice given by the very same people you want to go wheeling with. The same people you want to share a campfire with. And the very same people who would help you out on the trail.

Please read Richard's post again. Thanks.
