I've been letting some original Goo Gone formula sit on this for a couple nights now and it doesn't seem to be touching it at all. Any suggestions for a better solvent/whatever to get this gunk off before I put the new decal on?
That stuff really doesn't want to let go. I know from experience. I got Varmint #2 to 3D print me a Heep logo, so I really did need to clean the old stuff off since the new logo would not properly cover it.
I can't recall what I used. Xylene and Naphtha are both mild solvents. Acetone and Lacquer thinner are both too aggressive for use on paint. It is possible I used a polishing compound. Also probable I used a well honed razor blade to scrape off the old stuff before trying solvents/polishing compound (honed to prevent scratching).
I think I used a 3M or SEM Auto product on adhesive. I remember it working better than the Goo Gone. Also, there was a plastic scrapper, that was suppose to not scratch the paint.
I use Goof Off for that kind of stuff and have never had issues. Some people have said it ruined their clear coat but I have never experienced that by just wiping on and off. Just don't let it sit on the paint forever.
This stuff is so dang hard and thick I leaning away from polishing compound. My paint looks great and I don't have much experience with it. I'd hate to make a dull spot like I did on another car using the decal wheel you mentioned Rob. I probably leaned into it too much but once bitten twice shy. Instead of getting too aggressive I'm ok with letting some stay on there and letting it ride. Thanks for all the advice. It's in my notes now. Other than these suggestions I've also been told a little low heat from a heat gun might help if scraping.
