Yeah, the 250s were freakin' 855 cubes, and still made almost no power. I'm not sure why, guess they were built for reliability and torque, not power?
I love my M39 series (M54A2) 5 ton... except the engine, which is an unreliable pile of shit as far as I'm concerned. And the top speed leaves a lot to be desired.
Fortunately I have bought half the parts I need to remedy these shortcomings, and have the other half lined up... if I ever have the money to get them.
The 6CTA8.3 is pretty gutless for its displacement in stock form but yeah, I hear they can be tuned pretty nicely. Even a B series 5.9 can make stupid power reasonably reliably from what I've been told, so I figure another Cummins I6 diesel with more displacement should scale up appropriately unless they really screwed the pooch.
What exactly were they thinking running motor oil in the trans? Don't those big Allisons still need friction modifier since they use friction clutches like any other auto? Seems incredibly stupid, like trying to use motor oil in diffs because it means you only have to keep motor oil in stock.
