I was running the best u-joint napa sells, well i finally broke one this weekend,

going to go to a different one and run stock shafts with the larger ujoint(97 plus)

Any one know if napa sells spicers with the full clips?

Also was looking at the alloy usa joints for about 50 a pop w/ warrenty

looked at the yukon and ctm joints but 300 buck i dont see happening right away, also though about buying the yukon chromoly shafts with u-joints as iv read theyre made by the same company as the alloy usa shafts

by the way i broke it while crawling in the snow on 33" tires, but i was only running 3-4 lbs in the tires...Must be the insane traction my tires were getting.. :looney:

well im thinking im going to go with the spicer joints and hold off on the alloys, I still have to more spare sets of tj shafts left, so if i break another with the spicers ill go to alloys.. Tommorow ill take some pictures of what are left of the axle shafts.. and the used to be u-joint..

I only use spicer joints. I have a distributer here in town where I can get the joints for about $10 each. He sells to individuals at the same price he sells the shops (and they mark them up---usually alot).

Yeah, I had U-joints turn into a small pile of non-recognizable metal once. I ordered the Alloys not long after. I haven't got to run on them yet, actually.

I was suprised how quicky mine wore out, I thought they'd last a long time having a grease fitting on each cap, I used high pressure synthetic grease as well. I got seven months. My precision extra strenght have been good and cheap and lasted longer, I have a set of spicers to go in next

I have the precision ones as well, and they have held up fine so far with hard driving on 285/75's but no locker yet. Fairly cheap too.

High Angle Driveline sells spicer joints...
Quick shipping, and working with Jess over there is great...

The best U-joints money can buy are CTM joints - and they are about $200 a piece... I run them and can not say enough good things about them.

Though I wouldnt run them in anything other than alloy shafts - NOT YUKON SHAFTS...

and if you broke a u-joint , id seriously consider using new shafts with new u-joints - usually when the u-joint goes, the shafts are out of spec and need to be replaced...

One school of thought is that the axle U-joints are a good safety fuse for the axle. If you put CMTs or some other really tuff joint in, you just transfer the stress to other parts. Spicer joints are pretty strong, and they are cheap! They protect the axle shaft and the ring and pinion, especially in low pinion D-30s which are not as strong as high pinion iterations. I would personally not use alloys in a D-30 that has not had all the other little piglets polished. If you are building it to the hilt, fine. Otherwise, practice changing U-joints, make sure the shafts are in spec, and wheel it! Cheap insurance for other expensive parts. (or softer R foot!) Just my 2 cents. Have fun! Jim

well, iv wheeled it with 33's and a locked front end for over a year now, But i ran cv shafts and broke two of them, iv ran the stock axles for about 3-4 months with napa joints with no problems, but i strictly wheel it, and once a week im wheelin it, im going to see how much another set of tj shafts are at the junk yard, if theyre close price wise to alloys ill be upgrading, and its the high pinion,

heres the carnage, the other axle i had is an odd ball and takes a smaller joint, so ill be going alloys, im thinking yukons,

By my way of thinking, your U-Joint didn't fail, your axle did.

When Dana "upgraded" to the 760 joint, they shorted us on ear strength. when you stress the axle, the ears deform, the clip works loose, and you loose the cap. From then on, it's just a metal shreader.

After I shreaded my 1st one (drivers side), I replaced it with a new stock one. That one I twisted the splines on the shaft, so I upgraded the drivers side to a Yukon CM shaft, no further issues.

As it turns out, I run Precission joints because they are easily available. If Spicers were readily available, I'd put in Spicers.

I've stocked up on spicers for when the time comes, why are they so hard to get?? I had a buddy pull them from a few different stores in his chain. He can no longer get them though normal channels. The spicers side by side to my old alloys look stronger.

I ordered the Spicer joints yesterday, and ill order new chromoly yukon shafts tomorrow.. then ill be up and running, anyone ever have experience with yukons warranty?

i've heard good and bad about yukon, only good about alloyusa shafts

u-joints with the grease fitting in the cap instead of the body of the joint are also stronger as a rule of thumb. i picked up the "heavy duty" joints at the parts store which i think are 760x's. they have the fittings in a cap instead of the body. i think they were neapco joints and they've held up fine to my 33's and 4.56's. i have noticed that one particular clip on the passenger side works loose so i'll have to address that soon...

so a lil hijack here but its un clear this upgrade to u joint size u speak of . i have a d44 in th e front of my jeep and it uses the same size u joint as the d30 i believe , so if u upgrade the joint to one larger dont i need a new set of shafts?? i kno this may be a retarted question but its always been unclear to me :gee:

I think I've already said this but 760s come with the Yukon shafts if you order from PORC... What are the shafts alone costing you?

I've been trying to find out what has been said bad about them. Please fill me in.
