To those that like to drink/dive/offroad/baja 500 (not necesarilly in that order), invite to all interested:
Who would be interested in going to La Bufadora for Fri. June 2nd - Sun. June 4th. I believe that contingency for the BAJA 500 will be on Friday at Ensenada and the race will be Sat. Mornin. If there is enough interest (interest w/ people that have money) we can rent the dive house at La Bufadora and do some panga diving either Sat. afternoon after the race or Sunday mornin before heading home. Ill most likely bring my 3 kayaks to screw around on as well.
For those that dont know:
La Bufadora is about 20 minutes from Ensenada and about 3 hours from Costa Mesa (depending on traffic and how many taco stands we conquer.) Figure 15 MPG and its 168 miles from here it should cost about $33.00 in fuel each way, carpool is prefered to SHARE costs. The dive house is about $200.00 for the weekend (it is rustic and runs on car batteries but there is a toilet, kitchen, bunk beds for all, and a nice patio.) It sleeps 12 in beds and there are a couple of couches as well. Camping is the cheapest way and is available next to the house for next to nothing. Panga diving will cost ya about 30 bucks for the day to go whereever you want (within reason). There is a nice restaurant and a bar in walkable (or crawlable) distance from camping and the divehouse.
The BAJA 500 leaves from the baseball stadium in Ensenada and heads South in a 500 mile loop and arriving in Ensenada. The best action is to be seen before noon when the trophy trucks and class one cars pass through the areas south of Ensenada. I would like to head to Ojos Negros this year which is East of Ensenada, there is a giant jump there and people go absolutely nuts. Some decent offroading is to be found there as well. Usually most the action slows down after 12 noon and we head back to camp.
Diving is generally quite deep and frigid depending on where you dive (upwelling makes it cold in relation to So. Cal. diving). There is great diving, snorkeling, fishing, and spearfishing right off the beach in front of the divehouse. Because it is cold there is plenty of kelp forests (actual forests, not patches). Dale's La Bufadora Dive supplies the air, pangas (boats), rental gear (suggest bringing your own, his tanks are good though), and also rents the house and camping. He is a reasonable man, speaks english, and makes fair deals, sometimes trading for beer. La Bufadora is by far my favorite dive location (better than Hawaii, Cabo, Catalina, Laguna, etc.) Dive pangas hold up to 5-6 divers. Visability and water quality is generally good.
If you have never been to BAJA, this is your chance. You might need a passport to enter or more importanty come back from Mexico, need to check on that. Other than that there is nothing else to worry about. I have been going to BAJA for most of my life and have never had any problems with the law or anything else for that matter. (knock on wood). Should be a memorable experience. E-Mail me, message me, or call me for more info and to RSVP. If this is going to happen I need atleast 5 people to commit to this so that I can start planning.
