bad news for PAHighlander.... wish him the best..

If you missed Bill's post last night, 10 minutes after leaving Wright's Farm a drunk made a left turn right into him. Head-on collision. Bill's XJ is definitely totalled -- the unibody is badly tweaked at the B pillar, the engine was shoved back several inches, ... There's no question in my mind that a combination of "crumple zone" technology, air bag, and God as co-pilot saved him.

I went back up and helped him strip out all the radios and rescue gear, even the safari rack. We hauled it to my place, and a friend (a GOOD friend, I'd say) drove most of the day to meet us in Connecticut. We transferred the gear to the friend's truck and while I type they are en route back to PA, with an ETA of about 7:00 to 8:00 a.m.

I was at work most of today and didn't see the post till about 4 o'clock.

I talked to him around 10pm. I'm just RELIEVED that he's ok!!

Bill, when you read this, let me know about a buyback (and push it with the insurance) Ray (my boss) wants just wants it for the tranny and he said that WHATEVER you want back off the truck that is salvagable is yours.

hopefully everything will go through before I head back home for break, and I'll bring everything else back with me and make sure that you get it.

you've got my number, e-mail is [email protected]. if you forgot anything from it, make up a list, and I'll grab as much as I can from it.

Glad to hear you're OK PA Highlander. Sorry i missed you in RI, maybe we'll get you back up for a maine run sometime. Hope all works out to your benefit.

By the way, Happy Birthday for what it's worth.

Sorry to hear about that, that sucks alot, I know that I would be pissed too, but its good thing you are ok tho.

Bill sorry to hear that!!!

Glad you will still be here though!!!!!!

Thanks for all the concern folks! Also, thanks for the birthday wishes - sure a rough 32nd birthday.

Yes, I'm ok - I still have a headache and my neck is very stiff, so I might have my family doctor check me out just in case.

I made it home at 5:30 am today (Sun) and I owe my friends (Thanks Mike & Kelly!!) a huge favor for driving 6 hours to get me then turning right around for the 6 hour drive home. I also owe Harwood (Eagle) for going 2 hours out of his way to pick me up and then spend hours in the cold stripping all my gear from the XJ. I am so very lucky to have such good friends. Earl also stopped by for the finishing of the stripping and Ryan has offered much help once the insurance company cuts things loose.

The XJ as was mentioned is most certainly totalled. I am very pissed that my insurance company would not provide a one way rental until business hours Monday and wouldn't even guarantee it then! A one way rental to PA from RI was $500-700!!! I am at least home now, and should have a local rental tomorrow morning. A car should be fun with all this snow - got 10+" since I made it home with more on the way.

Here's the XJ:

Yikes!

Looks very similar to how my old XJ looked when I got it. Pretty mangled.
See the doc, as you said... just in case.
My ex wife was rear ended once a long time ago. She had pain for quite a while, so certainly have it looked at and documented just in case.

Yep, it's very mangled. After I speak with the claims folks I will be seeing a doctor as I still have a headache that Excedrin just won't help.

Here's the rest of the photos taken before Eagle and I stripped the XJ Crash photos

Bill glad to see you are ok. I would be extremely surprised if they did not total it. See that airbag deployed? Mucho $$$$ to fix right. Also, the salvage value should not be over 1K depending what the trend is up there. Down here at the auction I go to the highest I have seen an XJ go for is $950. And that one had very little damage but a buckled roof! Can we say unibody damage? Good luck and don't let them push you around!

Oh man, I just left after you too... I am very sorry to hear about the XJ. But, I am sure glad you are ok. Let me know if you need more help. I guess you made it back home, I will be in CT some time this coming week. I am not sure where the XJ is located now, but if you need more stuff taken off let me know.

Man this ticks me off.... we were even watching those idiots in the parking lot acting dumb before you left too....

Joe - sent you an email ...

Here's the update:

Talked to the claims folks today - it's going to the total loss dept now. They will inspect it shortly and make me a settlement offer. At that time I will find out the buy back cost since I'd still like some stuff back if feasable.

Damage list includes: hood, both fenders, grill, header panel, radiator, Tomken bumper, brushguard, Dana 30 axle, NP231 t-case (front shaft punched through it!), drivers door, air bag deployed, b-pillar damage, dash displaced, roof buckled, and multiple bends in the unibody.

The medical side of the claim is buying me new glasses - airbag did a number on mine. I did see a doctor about the headache and neck stiffness. My doctor has me on an anti-inflamatory and a muscle relaxant for that (ins. is covering that too).

I do have a rental car finally ('03 Impala :wierd: ) that I'll have until the claim is settled. I started the clutch replacement on the MJ tonight since it might be my only set of wheels here in a week or so. I hope to have that project finished Wed or Thur evening.

Thanks for all the thoughts!

did they give you the SS at least? :laugh3:

Sorry to hear of the loss of the Highlander, but I am glad you are ok. See an attorney you may have a case on your hands, I collected as did my bro when we were hit head on by a lady in a Honda SUV; it took a few years, and we did have to go to doctors etc. but worth it IMHO.

I like your rockrails, your accident looks like a classic frontal offset collision. What I find interesting is that the unique design of your rock rails, I believe, kept the rockers and frame relatively straight. The photos I have seen of stock XJs in similar laboratory accidents show the front wheels being pushed back in such a way as to cause buckling of the frame rail and or rocker, with significant deformation (inward deflection) of the floorboards thus exposing the occupants feet and or lower legs to harm. Good work!

Bill,

Glad to see that you're ok. I feel relieved that you were spared any truly horrendous injury. I do think that you should get a full work up from the doctors, however. Sometimes pertinent medical conditions take a while to fully reveal themselves.
I feel sick about your loss, as I'm sure you do. I know you were really close to having the truck where you wanted it.
I know my place is waaayyy out here from you, but if you need shop floor space at Honcho Headqtrs, just let me know.
I'll help you anyway that I can.

The rock rails were my design, based off of the best of many I found on the web. The axle and wheel only displaced until the rim contacted the rock rail, then stopped. Forward of the rails there is much unibody damage. If I'm lucky, once a buy back is available I may be able to get my rails back.

Deano,

I did get a fairly good check up from my doctor. Hopefully nothing further reveals itself.
You're right, I did have the XJ nearly where I wanted it - now I get to start over. I appreciate the offer for shop space. Right now my neighbor has loaned me a bay to work on the MJ, which isn't going well. Check out the thread in OEM Tech and see if you have any ideas.

Thanks!

Bill, sorry to read about your misfortune. But happy to hear your OK.

Listen, i have an 85 4door XJ with a rebuilt 2.8L and auto i had picked up for parts. This XJ has no rust, i took a few parts off it but your welcome to the rest if you'd like to come get it.

I dont think swapping your 4.0 in would be too difficult...
