backcountry touring

Hey folks, I'm planning on touring the backcountry of colorado in Breck. and Telluride areas. I plan to depart from my home here in Minnesota and tour for about a week. This has been something I've been wanting to do for a couple years now. I just purchased a 1999 XJ with a 3'' lift, 31x10.5, BFG MT. I'm planning on running Black Bear Pass and a few others in the breck. area. Anyone have some pointers, beside the usually survial gear and a hi-lift jack? Non of my loser friends want to go, will I be able to hook up with other wheelers on some of these trails or is it very remote and hard to get help if needed. I going mid- July

Yeah, call the national forest's rangers office and let them know what you are doing, and how long you expect to be gone. And check in when you get back to civilzation.

Headquarter at least a couple of days in Ouray. Do the Black Bear / Imogene loop and the Alpine Loop consisting of Engineer and Cinnamon Passes. In the Breckenridge area, Head up and over Webster, down to where you make a left onto RedCone, then loop back to the top of Webster via RedCone, back down Webster a half mile and then head up over Radical Hill and drop back into Breckenridge.

Another beautiful trip is taking Taylor Pass, from Taylor Park/Buena Vista, over the top and down into Aspen for lunch, then back up over Pearl Pass down to Crested Butte. Its a heck of a long day so start early, but well worth the trip.

The best tip is to post up here before you come and hook up with a few locals for the runs. There is always someone wanting to hit these runs.

Check out BushDucks.com ? net? for trail status. July can be a bit early for some of the high passes to be open.

Just a "heads-up".We'll be doing ColoradoFest probably the 3rd week of July next year.Location will be Montrose and/or Ouray.

thanks for the info everyone. It seems like a long time but it will go by quick. I will try to hook up with some locals via naxja a couple of months prior to leaving.

I don't think they opened Black Bear until Aug? this year so mid July might be kinda iffy, like said before. I am in the area so drop me a line when your gonna run those trails. Ouray is a great spot to headquarter at.
