So do you just put some shackles on the ends of the recovery strap when you use it?

Depends on the situation. I'd rather trust my 30/50K D-Rings over a hook.
Just make sure that you connect it out of harms way as well, nothing that would allow it to fray or become taggled. I also (more of a practice for winch cable) always place a blanket or coat over the middle of the strap in case it does fail, stops a lot of recoil.

go to the tractor supply store and buy the recovery ropes there.

Went hunting for them today.

They have 2x20 8500lb limit recovery straps for $27.99 at TSC.

They also have tow hooks for $7 each and D-Rings for $5 but do they make a mount to put D-Rings on any aftermarket brushgaurd? I couldnt find them.

Id say get at least a 15k strap. Stay away from TSC, their new cheaper straps totally SUCK, but their good ones, mine was $65, are killer.

Here's why you stay away from metal ends... what if it wouldve went for my head!! :D

Don't be pulling on that brush guard eather. It'll pull right off, or bend the mounts. You need to get a good tow hook, or shackle mounting kit like a C-4x4
Rusteys Off Road (although I have seen them bent from hard pulls)
OEM at the least.

^lol Thats not the problem.

The problem is that the XJ has taken its place as my 6th car.

85 Nissan 720
88 Rx7
89 Rx7
71 road runner
75 DJ5 Jeep
84 Ford f150
03 Tiburon
96 XJ

They all run and none are stock :)

hold onto the "tow strap". you may never use it, but it can come in handy for some stuff. like pulling an idjit Ford Explorer out of a flooded road after he killed his engine. no safe place to loop a recovery strap to, and as long as you keep the stress well below the breaking points of the strap, you're good.

but for recovering a stuck vehicle... definately get a true recovery strap. in addition to not having dangerous metal parts, they're designed to stretch when you pull on them, giving a little extra help to pull on the other vehicle when the strap tries to go back to its normal length. a 20,000lb strap is usually all you need for a Jeep. the 3" straps I only see used by the big fullsize mud trucks, since they weigh considerably more than any Jeep,

IDK why people keep saying not to use the hooks to "recover" something but OK to pull out other things... When your pulling someone out, your recovering them...
Just dont use the straps with the metal hooks, thy're dangerous, if theres somewhere to hook a hook then theres somewhere to loop a strap. 9/10 you can loop it around they're front axle if the have no recovery points and are stuck. anyways sucks about the whole problem... I get straps at army surplus' 3"X20' guarentee never break.
