AW4 transmission rubber oil pan gasket

Dealership says item is no longer serviceable .. (original OEM shows a seal or sealant 83504056 was used)

I would like to replace the old rubber pan gasket with a new rubber gasket ... or one from Mopar ... made from plastic or rubber?

I know you can use cork, sealant, RTV, etc.

Looking for a place to purchase and part number(s)

(Cherokee 4.0L 4WD through 2001)

Last AW4 I did a service on, the shop I was working at mainly used carquest and it was a rubber gasket. I would call your local one and ask.

Local Carquest said they don't carry any rubber ones ... local transmission shop said they carry oil pan gaskets made from fiber (not rubber or cork) ..

ATP RG-31 is a rubber/steel gasket. You can get it from RockAuto for $2.55.
 
Mopar makes an excellent rtv specifically for trans fluid applications. Boy howdy it works great. Stinks to high heaven though

You also got to know what you are doing, the Jeep dealership put my pan on with so much RTV pieces and chunks jell off and were floating around in the pan. I really believe that is why my tranny died.
 
man, its too early... read it right the first time...
my new gasket came in the box with the filter, a 1 piece cheap rubber..

Previously there was a rubber gasket installed with a bead of RTV between the pan and gasket, mating plain rubber to the transmission.

When changing the filter the pan only needed to be dropped enough to remove and change the filter. The rubber gasket could be re-used without applying new sealant.

The new Wix filter came with a cork gasket, the old rubber appeared to be getting old after being reused multiple times so I pulled the pan and installed the Wix cork gasket with some copper RTV on both sides ...

The cork gasket became squished and flattened out, (where the rubber one held its shape). Cork gaskets can sometimes be reused if not damaged, but I think rubber besides not loosing its shape would also have better resistance to oil, chemicals, salts, etc. and last longer.

After ordering the ATP RG-31 from Rock Auto I will try using a RTV on one side similar to how the previous one was installed. ( looking for any leaks after installation,)

Hand tightening bolts sometimes work if you can get the right torque for the number of bolts, gasket material and sealant type.

OE Torque specs from a 99 XJ FSM for the 19 pan bolts and gasket materials is around 5 ft/lbs or 6–8 N·m (53–70 in. lbs.)

Jeep parts manual shows the original OEM part as a Chrysler RTV sealant, that may have been sometimes used with a thin plastic gasket that held the sealant in place on both sides for installation purposes.

As one person noted, having loose sealant floating around inside the transmission might not be a good idea

I also found a small Wix magnetic filter installed inline near the external cooler. Inline filters can be found for around $15.00 .. provides additional filtering and helps filters out additional loose debris that might be dislodged or added after a flush, oil change, etc.

I have done a couple of passive flushes one at around ~125,000 and another around ~190,000 miles replacing most of the ATF ... mostly for preventative maintenance purposes.

Theoretically ATF should not require a complete flush for the life of the transmission .. i.e. if the ATF and filter has been changed regularly every ~12,000 to ~30,000 miles depending on type of use, i.e. severe to normal duty ..

FYI or anyone who's interested in other details.

I probably should have used an ATV sealant on the cork gasket (the transmission service hasn't' yet been completed). The ATV used on the cork gasket is from what was laying around ... a thin coat of ATV gasket maker, isn't necessarily a proper use for this type ATV product.

The cork gasket will be replaced with a new rubber one, from what I know about it, can be installed dry ... with or without a sealant.

* For proper installation of ATV products an ATV sealant formula design may be for use with a gasket (such as cork, rubber, etc.) as a sealer, whereas an ATV gasket maker formula may be designed for use by itself without any gasket material.

Here is some information found about the ATP RG-31 gasket.

_ RG-31 is not an ATP reusable gasket.

_ RG-31 is an ATP Third Hand gasket manufactured from a material that incorporates various fibers and rubber to provide a leak free seal.
It should be installed dry for best results.

Here are three ATV products found, described to work with automotive applications as oil seals. (You may want to first look through an ATVs TDS to determine product application, installation, etc.)

Permatex Automatic Transmission RTV Sealant 81180 (can be used as used as a gasket maker or dressing)

Permatex 85409 Ultra Rubber Gasket Sealant & Dressing (TDS shows it can be used with other types of gasket materials)

Permatex Form-A-Gasket No. 2 Sealant

I purchased a gasket from Napa - some sort of rubber. I've pulled the pan and reinstalled it w/o issue w/ the gasket. I installed it "dry".

I think dry is sometimes better as there is no mess and eliminates sealant from getting inside the transmission.

I am looking around for a reusable gasket that fits the AW4, A340 & A650E.

Most gaskets cam be reused if not damaged too badly, but may eventually develop leaks if not the reusable type, as most are made to be used once then thrown away ... ...

We use to make our own gaskets from cork, paper or rubber, which can become time consuming.

If you are working on a transmission in areas without access to a new replacement gasket and/or gasket materials then you have to use and/or repair the old one which might develop leaks.
