Aussie Lockers

I'm looking into Aussie Lockers and I was wondering if anybody runs them here and what they think of them. If I go ahead and lock my D35 rear axle will I mess anything up like tires or springs from on-road use because this is my DD or would it be worth it to swap over to a D44 XJ axle and then get the locker? Also will it mess anything up on my front axle if I lock my D30 and is there an upgrade axle-wise I can do that won't significantly widen or shorten the track-width?
Thanks

This is a very nice locker!
I have one in the front of my TJ D30. Aside from the "clicking" in corners, its invisable on the street in 2WD.

MY suggestion, because you mentioned upgrading to a D44, is not to spend any cash on the D35. If you "need" ;) to lock something now, go ahead and lock the D30. Save your coins for the D44 upgrade, then lock that.
OR, do the D44 upgrade and lock that when you can. Its an easy upgrade, with a little experience you should be able to do the front and/or back at home with little difficulty.
Good luck,
CW

X2, dont waste your money on that D35.

So why exactly is the D35 so bad?

Small axles, thin tubes, and small gears = Pow, Crack, Boom

X2...If your not going bigger than 33s then check into a 29 spline 8.25" (97-01) Basically a straight bolt in.
I Emailed Aussie and they said they have a locker in development for the 8.25" and it should be available in the fall. Also they were VERY fast to respond so I would assume they also have good service!

So the 8.25 is on 97-01 XJ's right? Are there non-ABS versions because my XJ is a 90.

I'vs also heard that if you run lockers on the front axle you need to get manual hubs, why is this?

mine is also a 90 (non-ABS), the only thing I had to modify was the e-brake cables. The 97-01 model 8.25 is the 29 spline version. There is a slight difference in driveshaft legnth (the d35 is longer) but this actually helped me, I have about 6" of lift, 1" T-case drop, no SYE, and NO vibes or binding!
BTW they didn't use this axle with ABS.

Also you should have a disco axle so you don't need hubs with a front locker. It would be VERY harsh to run a locker without this or hubs. As long as you have the disco axle you will be fine!

The aussie in front has no effect in 2wd. So disco front or not it works great. I have one in the front of mine and love it.

BS bro. Sorry, but it's not true.

You can run a front locker in any XJ front axle. Since there's no torque being applied to the axle in two wheel drive, the locker isn't engaged and doesn't function. I've had three different Aussie lockers, and currently have them in both the front and rear of my XJ. The D30 I ran it in was a NON-disco and was unnoticeable on pavement. The D30 has since been sold.

You're right, MY BAD!!! I was thinking about spools, lincoln, etc... thanks for clearing that up, been a long day!

Pulled my D35 because I couldn't justify fixing the pinion seal. Put an Aussie Locker in my replacement D44 while it was on the bench. Major improvement offroad, on the street it takes a little getting used to.

With the D30, everything I have been able to find says with the non-disco axle, AND the NP242 fulltime xfer case (my situation) driveline bind is an issue with any non-selectable locker or even LSD in full-time. Planning to use a selectable locker so I can still use full-time when I need it. Also, can't assume the early models were all disco-axles - I've got a non-disco/242 combo in an 87 and a 91 in the driveway.

Anyone actually run in full-time with a front locker?

Anyone use a lunchbox locker in the front of their jeep, non-disconnect, in the snow, in 4-wheel drive, on city streets? In MN 4 wheel drive can be necessary at times. I understand that they are not noticeable in 2wd but how does it act on slippery roads in 4wd? Is it unusable?

It just takes some getting used to. After I installed mine & when we got our first good snow, I went to a large parking lot & played for a while. If you don't drive like an idiot you will be fine. JIM.

oh - buying the aussie for the d44 front soon - ill let you know what i think...

wish they made one for a ford 9
the engineers are going to be looking into a ford 9 version starting in october...

maybe ill wait, maybe one locker will work...

I don't know Ranger. I'd lock up that 44 and have fun. Saw bj-666 drive his with the aussie front everywhere the dual locked or spooled guys did last year. Lock your 9 after they get one made. You'll love the difference offroad with the front locked.
