Hey,

Im highly considering joining the Army ROTC up at my college. Only problem is my parents are against it. Im not looking for their approval to do it I just want their blessings so I can sign and no worry about the family aspect.

Any ideas on how to change their mind?

Thanks
Jordan

You won't be able to change their mind. Only they can do that. You do what you need to do and assuming they care about you (as most parents do), they'll come around and be proud. Parents are strange with military service sometimes. Inviting them to a graduation can really show them the hard work you've gone through to get there.

You've obviously been thinking about it so you want to do it. You're not being selfish.

Ive thought about it a lot.

My best friend is currently in West Point. His Girlfriend is joining ROTC and they gave me the idea. I feel like it gives my a purpose well Im in college. High School I had wrestling and Im tired of that.

I told my parents its 3 years active duty and 5 years IRR and Im willing to take the chance to be deployed.

And hell College graduate with military experience looks great on any resume.

The following advice is intended only to be helpful:

I know sir that having your parent's approval is very important at your age.
However, it is not uncommon for young adults to disagree with their parents.

Some of those people let their parent's will circumvent their own - to their own detriment.
Don't be an a-hole to your parents, but learn to be firm. And let them know where you stand.

If you are still living with them, or are in a dorm, and have no permanent house of your own, the worst that they could do is to cut the financial cords. THEY would be the a-holes if they did that, but let your recruiter know if they did, because they might be able to help you financially in such a situation.

And here's the best advice of all: Don't let your parent's rule your life if/when you get married. Being caught in the middle between your parents and your spouse is NOT a nice place to be.

Don't try to convince them.

Look at your options with the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines before you jump into the AROTC pit and sign your name.

Don't just join because your buddies did. And don't feel like you have to Go Army.

I almost signed on with AROTC twice before I found a better option with the Navy.

Figure out what you want to do first in the Army before you sign up. Don't join just for the military experience.

Learn about their branches. Then go learn about the other services. There is a lot of stuff to do as an officer in the military. Some jobs aren't as cool as others.

If you need money for school AROTC is a good option. They hand out scholarships a lot.

You could also pose the option of joining another branch of the service to them. Sometimes parents would prefer their child to go into a branch other than the army.

BUT if you want Army then you do it. It's YOUR life.

Stay safe.

Go Navy.

EDIT: To add one more thing.

When you think you've thought about it enough. Think about it a little bit more. These types of decisions should never be rushed. You can always try out AROTC for the first 2 years to see if you like it. You aren't committed to signing a contract until the MS3 year.

I went through Air Force ROTC during college and think it is becoming one of the best options out there. Mainly because there are so MANY ways to do it. If you have more than 2 years left you can do ROTC. You can do it from the beginning and sign up then for a contract, or you can do it without signing for 2 years to see if you even like it. You can get your entire ride paid for if your grades are good enough. They will give you a pretty good taste of what it will be like through the classes and weekend trips, plus they will give you summer programs as well. I am pretty sure all the branches do this. If nothing else it should help to make you stay above a 2.0.

AFROTC gave me the extra incentive to keep the grades up so I could pick up a flight spot. ARMY will be the same way, if you want a particular job, the only way to ensure your chances of getting it is to be the best student and cadet.

Tell your parents to drink water.
Do whats right for you and our nation.

And when your tired of drinking water, drink some more.

But honestly you probably won't get them to accept your decision, our missions right now are war. Its kinda hard to want your child to go off and wage war. Your mother may never come around, my mom still has issues after 16 years. Your father should come around and respect your decision as man.

I will say don't do it because your friends are, do it because it's something you feel the need to do for your life and for your fellow American. I don't mean to come across like an ass but I don't need another LT that is just here to pad his resume. I need a LT that will lead from the front when it counts. Seriously think about what your willing to sacrifice for your country and your battle buddy.

Go Army!

Ok I may have worded my last post a little weakly.

I want to join because it is a real reason to wake up in to morning to eat right to work out. I would rather better myself to better my team (for lack of better terms).

I feel the army would give me a purpose.

What do YOU want to do in the Army? Do you want to go infantry, armor, medical service corps, aviation, intel???

Now I was never military, but My Cousin just got out of active duty into his reserve from his Army career after ROTC, he was deployed to Iraq in combat engineers clearing IED's but he's home safe and the Army has been good to him. College paid for and he has a ton of savings (army basically paid for everything for 3 yrs and he sacked away his pay) now and is going for a 2nd degree. He's all of maybe 25 yrs old is on his way to a 2nd degree and is a Capt in the Army, Airborne, Air Assult, ranger. All in all I would say not too shabby.

And thanks to all our boys past and present:patriot: (I have another cuz who just graduated Air Force Tacp I am the civilian slacker in the family)

Well you have the right as an American citizen to join our military. Your actions to volunteer is what makes the American military stronger than any other country. We (American Military members) WANT TO do this noble and patriotic job. And there is nothing more humbling(and exilerating) to lead your troops into combat. I know that for sure. Just remeber, when you join the Army, you become a soilder, when you join the Navy, you become a sailor, when you join the Air Force, you become an Airman, and when you join the Marines, you become a Marine. As as a Marine, everything else is just rated at 'army strong'. "Some people go their entire lives wondering if they have made a differance in the world, the Marines don't have that problem"-Ronald Regan.

Good luck with your choice.

SAPPERs lead the way.

Did I mention Go Army!

Honestly, given that you are doing ROTC, I would try a semester or two before you sign. How many years do you have left in school? I had a few friends that Signed every paper the ROTC people put in from of them and it bit them after one semester when they decided that the job was not for them. Either way, stick with your decision, and you will probably gain a lot.

I actually had to do my first two years without a contract because I had some issues with my medical. By the time it cleared I knew for absolute sure that it was what I wanted and signed up as soon as I was able.
