Anyone that hasn't adjusted their Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Well I can't even push the flippin' button. It seems to be quite stuck. Any suggestions?

Hose it down with your favorite aerosol lubricant, wait a bit, try it again?

X2, had to do that on my 96, it was all full of road dirt and grit.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Well, I just tried it. Will see how it does tonight when I go to work

:woohoo:

Just finished doing this on mine since i noticed it took forever to shift out of first gear. It clicked twice. Not sure if it was badly out of adjustment but, I definitely can feel a difference. It shifts much easier now with less pedal effort. I can't wait to get her on the freeway!

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Ok so I drove it around and I don't think it made a difference for me. It was either already in adjustment or I simply just didn't do it correctly.

Did you feel overlap between 1-2-3-4 in your trans before calibration? ... if was shifting into gear without overlap then you wouldn't feel any difference. My XJ went out of adjustment more when it was newer... trans cable probably was stretching at the time. I calibrated it 4 or 5 times over the 20 years I've owned mine, whether it needed it or not.

This is similar to a motorcycle clutch cable... needs adjustment now and then.

I'm really picky about how automatics should shift... my AW4 has firmer shift points than my 2010 Grand Cherokee SRT with a NAG transmission out of an AMG E55 Mercedes.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Same. The firmer the shifts are the less the clutches slip, and I like that for longevity... so long as it isn't damaging the gears instead.

I'm sorry, can you elaborate on the overlap part? I just put in a new motor in it about 4 months ago and it's shifts the same now after adjusting my cable as it did when I did the new motor.

When you installed the new motor and attached the throttle/trans cable, you probably had it set correctly... therefore resetting again won't do anything. This is more a calibration procedure to assure the throttle valve cam in the transmission is in the correct position.

"Overlap" definition. I read a technical paper to improve shift performance by installing a B&M valve body in GM transmission. When I came across the design features and specs of an automatic, the engineer referred to shift smoothness or firmness as overlap.

It appeared to describe this function adequately, therefore I've been using the term ever since.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

I see what your saying now. In the near future I think I'm gonna play with the cable here and there and see if I can't fine tune it. I have 33's on sotck 3:55's so it's a little slow but I'm hopeing this will help out a little bit untill I can do 35's on 4:88's.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Why is everyone making such a big deal about not having WOT after adjustment? It's not that hard really...push the pedal with your foot and don't be a girl about it. It will ratchet to the setting it needs to be in.

I tend to mess around with pretty much evey setting I have on my XJ, I enjoy messing around with stuff and getting it to the best possible setting.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

I have had a harsh shift, intermittently, from 2 to 3 for some time on my '99.

This adjustment seems to have fixed it. Can't believe the difference in driveability.

Many thanks to the OP.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

What I've found is that I just have to put less foot into it to get the same result. I just went on a road/off road trip this weekend after making this adjustment and the thing drove like a whole new beast. I cruised 180 miles at 55-70 through the Feather River Canyon (CA 70) without a hiccup, towing my trailer and made about 18 mpg. Smooth as a baby's butt, on a 90 with 230K. I'm happy.

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Help..... When I checked mine the conduit was already pushed all the way in. I pushed the button and pulled it out to see if there was any movement. Then I pushed it back in, released the button, and went to full throttle. Looked at it and no change. It is still pushed all the way in..... Am I doing something wrong?

!!!1 This is seriously ridiculous!! It's not that difficult....read through the multiple pages on this thread on how it was explained how exactly to do this. You're not the first person!

Re: Anyone that hasn't adjusted there Throttle Valve cable do it. WOW.

Many thanks for posting this tip. My Cherokee was running a little rough at low throttle openings and is now quite smooth after the adjustment.

Steve.
