Anyone offer an MLS head gasket for the 4.0?

victor renalz I think it is, or something along those lines.

my first head gasket was fel pro, ya, fibre. but the victor one, was multi layer of steel or something along those lines. looked like a much better quality gasket, from my little knowledge that is.

Hrmm, I'll have to look that up.

wolfpackjeeperi used a felpro from advance. I have yet to have a problem with it, and this is on my stroker with 12k on it.

Fel pros suck. Sure they work just fine for an N/A engine, but for a boosted motor I'd rather use tissue paper over a felpro. I've personally seen a handful of motors blow out a fiber gasket including one of my own.

Also having to clean that crap off the head/block is just a PITA. MLS FTW. :guitar:
 
before I popped the motor it had 50k miles on that head gasket with no problems. when we pulled the head, the gasket still looked great

I have never had a problem with them, done a couple of gasket replacements for people without a problem. 3 years later still doing fine.

Boosted may become an issue. I dont know, I have not finished my turbo setup yet, and it got shelved till after I get moved to florida anyway. A guy did tell me he could custom cut me one out of layers of copper, but it was gonna cost half again what the stroker build did so I went with the one from work.
 
What head gasket do the turbo Wrangler guys run? The engine cant tell if its in a cherokee or a wrangler. Also, what do the supercharger kit builders reccomend?

A friend of mine is building a stroker now that he has seen mine, the engine builder actually strongly recommended him to not use the victor reinz and get a premium felpro, instead. Said that he has seen a lot of problems outor of the victors

I will have to look when I get to work next time, but I believe the felpro is a layered steel gasket anyway.

not sure what the premium felpro is made of, but the felpro head gasket that came in my head gasket kit was a cork like material.
I really can't argue one way or the other which is better or why... but the Victor looked higher quality. looks can be deceiving though, so can't go off that.
 
I dont think that any headgasket is made of cork, valve cover yes, head gasket no.

And after looking, the head gasket I used, from felpro, is a layered steel gasket. At least it says so on the outside of the package, I didnt tear into the plastic to look since customers tend to get pissy if the package has been opened.
 
again I really only have experience with the one felpro I have seen, and the victor reinz I got after.
my mechanic wasn't impressed with the felpro I put in as part of the kit, but liked the victor I got on its own when he had to fix a valve problem.

either way, I didn't take a lot of time to look at the felpro, just looked cork like. the valve cover gasket in the kit was rubber.

seeing as I have no knowledge one way or the other. would there be a reason one would perform better than the other? felpro layered steel as opposed to victor? and what would be the bonus of the layered copper someone wrote about earlier?
 
copper only works if you can torque it. I just pulled off a 1mm thick copper gasket off my other car....you be the judge:

problem is too thick of a gasket and 18lb/ft torque spec. I'm working with John at http://www.gasketstogo.com/ to make a multi-layer embossed stainless gasket.

If you can scan the gasket from the Jeep head, he can make it for you....whatever specs you want.
 
If you are really paranoid you could always cut a reciever groove in the block and ring the head or vice-versa.

18ft-lb? intake or exhaust maybe? thought I remembered torquing the head to 110 or 150. I was hoping for a copper, but the only way I could find them they were really expensive, at least enough to where I decided it was not worth it.
 
copper will compress, but only with more torque. That spec is not on my XJ, but the exhaust manifold on my MINI. 18lb/ft = nowhere near enough to compress 1mm copper. Maybe 1mm three ply copper, but this was a solid piece.
 
thats what i meant, different car different spec. 18ft-lbs will not compress it, 125ft-lbs will though. That is an interesting looking gasket design for the exhaust.
 
Just remember that on a mini the exhaust studs are probably 8mm, into an aluminum head. Not exactly a good candidate for high torque.

exactly right. M8x1.25 and it's a $2k port and polished head....that's why the ports are so large (double stock size).
 
I would always rather have a stainless steel MLS gasket VS a copper. A copper head gasket will require steel rings around the cylinder walls to prevent burn out and hold a proper seal. Also the copper gasket isn't reusable, where most good stainless MLS gaskets can be used a couple times with no problems (I've used one up to 3 times). Also the stainless has better torque retention as it will expand more than a copper or fiber gasket.

Does anyone have pics of this felpro "steel MLS gasket?"
