Anyone ever been to Portsmouth, NC?

I've been looking for a cool place to go wheeling at the beach (as I'm planning to move back to TX in a few months) and came across Portsmouth - a ghost island just southwest of Ocracoke:

I kinda want to go tonight/tomorrow... Anyone have any tips or some time to burn?

Never have wandered up to the outerbanks with the Jeep. Only places i've driven/camped on the beach were Topsail Island and Carolina Beach.

Sure does seem interesting. take a lot of pictures and give us a write-up! I like seclusion. There is an island (Bear?) we took the boy scouts to once that you either had to take a ferry or paddle out, but they head campsites protected by dunes. Obviously there were no crowds.

I go surf fishing there. Only cabins have electricity and running water. The ferry ride is kinda cool. That island gets crippled by hurricanes so the island is pretty flat. Have fun!

How is the surf fishing there? I'm considering that location now for exactly that with a friend in the next month or so.

We go to Corolla and Corova every year, its the 2 farthest counties in the outerbanks, Corova being the furthest and having NO paved roads...Just sand, sand and more sand.....they have dunes you can wheel through also but be careful not to go on dunes off limits... they have wild horses all over the area that are cool to see. Also Atlantic beach actually have some pretty intense stuff.

Been to Carolina beach and the other one that's about 10 miles south of Carolina beach. Can't remember the name of it. It's past the Fort Fischer gates.
