anyone else need to change their rear main seal

It's a really fun and clean job......That's why I paid for it to get done, lol.

Actually it's not that bad. Just time consuming, and a bunch of bolts, suspension, starter, etc to take off.

i have read up on it and i think i am lifted high enough to not have to remove anyof my suspension

I did mine about a month ago.Picking up the parts to do it on my kids XJ. There are writeups out there. I used this one for reference. http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoRearMain.htm. Do yourself a favor and clean the underside of the oil pan/engine first. a day at least before tearing into it and wear eye protection. Also jack up the jeep at the frame with good quality jack stands. I figured with 4.5 lift I could get the pan out, NOT!! wasted a 20$ gasket before jacking it up. I would invite you up but I don't know exactly when I am going to do this since I jacked up my back.:bawl:

Thanks, My Reno run is in jepardy so I am not thrilled. Sitting at home doing nothing is driving my nuts!! I was worried too but it wasn't bad. Once you get the top seal out, use the soap and oil and it will slide right in.. The bottom one is cake just be sure the lip is facing the right way.. Good Luck!!

ya i also feel better now to do it, because it was my girlfriends dd and she just bought an infinty g35 so now i can work on the jeep and not worry about her needing it by the next day for work

I will saddest this as well. Grab some good degreaser from your local hardware store and borrow a power washer. Do the whole lower half of the engine and trans. Your eyes and face will thank you.

I got my pan out with stock suspension. Just have to pull the tires and let everything hang. It was a lot easier the second time though when I pulled the oil pickup. It's just one bolt and saves a lot of headache.

i don't even know why you're bothering replacing it. I'm not an engineer, but this engineering flow chart has helped me for years:

it looks to me like maybe the back half of the oil pan needs a little duct tape?
maybe spray some wd40 on it beforehand?
edit: i plan on beating this stupid pic like a dead horse until everyone hates seeing it. it makes me laugh every time.

i kinda wanna rebuild my whole motor since it isnt a dd anymore how long would something like that take??and cost???

18$ in duct tape. about 15$ in WD40. about 20 minutes to duct tape entire motor and spray down with wd40.

i think you're better off finding a used low mileage motor with good compression from somewhere reputable.

I've swapped in junk yard motors in the past. just find a decent yard that you can trust. I'm sure a decent jeep yard wouldn't screw you over on a bad motor, maybe a little on price. why do you want to rebuild it anyway? these 4.0s last forever. unless you got a low end knock. you can rebuild the head kinda cheap compared to a full tear down , thats an idea.

I havent looked yet but i have a slight knock in the motor cant really tell where it is from i know that it was about 3 qts low at one point on oil

if you have to ask then you shouldnt do it. Id fill the engine with 15w40 and see how it runs from there. If it misfires then fix all those problems before you think about a rebuild. Then when all the driveability problems are fixed then consider a rebuild. These things last forever. I have one with 275k on it, running on 15w40 with 40 psi cold idle, 25ish hot idle. gets 21 mpgs.
