Anyone down with Vdubs?

I have 2 toys one being my '89 XJ and the other being my '78 VW Super Beetle 'Vert. Now some purists will say my fuel-injected '78 is not a true bug but I've had 12 different bugs over the years and this one has been the most reliable and we've had it in our family since '86 (2nd owners). It's lowered of course and I just got it painted Subaru WRX blue this past winter. Anyone else out there wheel and have any bugs?

I've got a subie and an XJ and a blazer....call me eclectic.

as long as you don't mind the vdub being watercooled

I had a '78 Wolfsburg Van. Brown/butterscotch pudding colored. Sun roof the size of Nebraska. 2000 ci engine. Ebersbacher gasoline heater, 4 speed. It was great until the engine tore itself up starting one February morning at 15 below zero. It was a great car, and had so much ground clearance I could wheel it in northern Michigan on the Forest Service 2 tracks. I'd go around a corner and there would be some hot-rod in his lifted Toyota pu feein' all macho. I'd just idle by in 2nd and wave.

I had a series of 70's vintage VW buses, including at various times 3 campers. For a while my not-then-yet-ex wife and I and our 3 kids convoyed in a pair of them. I have away my 73 a couple of years ago when I realized it was never going to leave the barn again under its own power. I sitll have a couple of VW engines, though, and an industrial engine mount, waiting for an interesting use. Maybe a welding generator or something.

I've owned three newer ones...pieces of $hit. I'm not sure why it took three to get me away from them.

why would u even buy 1

I've had various air cooled buses, squarebacks, bugs, and this is the only 'vert I've ever had. I've had several bugs that you could drop the clutch and launch the front end up off the ground. Good times. This one that I have now has to be smogged so I'm limited but looking into a turbo for it. I'm currently looking at a '59 split window ragtop bug with original semiphore turn signals. My XJ takes a lot of my toy money though, so who knows if I can trick the old lady into letting me get another bug. She's been stealing my Jeep on a daily basis. Maybe it's time for another XJ?

Before the move out to Colorado that's all I messed with. Mostly naturally aspirated stuff with stand alone so it wasn't crazy fast stuff but the suspensions were all dialed. Before I left, my brother wanted to play with the drag racing scene. At that point we had a 92 four door that we stuffed a 16 valve 2 liter into with SDS. It dynoed at 175ish at the wheels. Then we picked up a beater A2 Golf. Put an ABA 2 liter in it with another SDS unit and a turbo out of an STI. Stock innards in the motor and stock trans. internals. Since I've been gone he's really taken it up a knotch. Full cage, slicks, coilovers, fuel cell, plexiglass, beefy trans, high compression pistons and a nifty little intercooler system out of Chevy Cyclone. He has a cooler secured to the passenger floor board that gets filled with ice and really lowers the incoming air temps. He even picked up sponsorship with Polk Audio and a local shop. I just heard from him. He made it to the finals at Gateway on Tuesday night for their big import night. He got matched up against a RX7 with 600 at the wheels that was running consistent low 10's all night. The Mazda ran 10.3 and won but Adam ran 11.47. He said the gas is coming soon. Here's a video of that last run. Pretty fawkin' proud of him.

Check those years. I'm under the impression they dropped the split window for the oval in 54 and the semaphores in 55, at least in the USA. I may be wrong, of course. VW used to put out a handy little "what year is it" pamphlet. I'll have to see if I can still find mine, but a split window with semaphores would, I think, be a 53 or older. Of course a convertible would not have a split window anyway, but if you mean the one with the full-length cloth sunroof, it would.

theres my euro treated 16v rocco next to the xj...sellin the rocco and the rado to fund a new xj for my girl and new parts for me...i like my dubs, have since my first one when i was sixteen, but going fast doesnt compare to going anywhere i want. :) I'll buy another A2 eventually, but for now, i wanna do more to the Jeep.

That would be a '51 I'm looking at, not '59. Checked it out today in person and the semiphores don't look stock though dude says they are. It's a ragtop not a 'vert like my current one and I think they want too much. Made them an offer so we'll see. If not another XJ might need to join my family :)
