you should also look into compressed natural gas. it's even cheaper!

I have, and I wish! A gallon equivalent is about $1.20 here. If I just had a way to compress it from my home natural gas line without buying a $10,000 compressor!

For tanks I've been looking on craigslist, there seems to be a lot of RV tanks and tanks removed from older converted propane trucks. I would guess they are DOT approved(?) and would be fine as long as they're within their test date...if not I could have them re-tested. They never "go bad" unless they rust from the outside in.

As for the dual fuel thing that would be nice, BUT, to get the best mileage/performance out of propane you have to tweek the compression and timing. Dedicated fuel vehicles are usually more efficient. How cold is "cold"? We just had a week of record lows in which 20 would be the lowest I would start it at, but, most the time it's going to be above freezing. At 30 degrees the vapor pressure of propane is still over 50 PSI. I wonder if I could use some sort of plug in electric warmer for the propane tank, like a block heater.

I totally know what you mean about temps though, this last week my propane heaters in the shop have been freezing themselves shut!

Hi guys.

an LPG (what we call GAS) conversion is an extremely popular conversion in australia.
almost EVERY single taxi is a Dual fuel. the reason is that in australia, fuel costs about $1.21 AUD per Litre (a lot more than what you pay) whereas LPG (propane etc) costs around 50 cents or so. a good conversion that DOES NOT change the timing still saves money here. if you alter the timing, you are REALLY saving.

there are heaps of guys rinning XJ's here with propane, there are dedicated gas conversion places here that can add a40 or 50 litre tank in addition to your normal fuel tank so you can switch over (and the tank even mounts underneath your car!)

you will always have a lower MPG than with petrol, as even with the higher octane rating, the fuel is far less dense.(i think about 10 - 20 % worse).

look on ausjeepoffroad.com for xj conversions and look up "LPG conversions" or "dual fuel conversion" on google, i'll bet the site will be an aussie one.

Hello I just seen one Monday.I live in Cuba Missouri I look a friend to Rolla,MO to a rehab center he has diebittis think I spelled that right anyway Rolla is about 12 miles from me .I was standing out side thaking a cigg breake and there is a 96 xj parked in the lot back end toward me. I was kind of looking it over and seen a large lp tank up agence the backseat.I steped around to the drivers side right at the bummper there was lp fill cap on the front fender was a sign something dot aproved lp powered system .I keep whatching for who ever owned it to come out . But we left before they came out.I did ask the receptions who had it and she said one of there empolye did.I may try to get a hold of them and see how every thing works.

Is there a site somewhere, or a thread here that discusses the conversion without a kit? By that I mean like a make it yourself kind of kit? Or are these things best left to an actual kit? Basically I am looking for a cheaper alternative to having to buy a kit which is why I am asking. Thanks again, hope everyone enjoys their holiday,

yrs ago i use to work on lp systems about 25 yrs ago come to think of it dam times flys LOL any way they were on 350 chevy tuck that came from Stlouis a friend got them from the city of STL . They had a heater that heated the lp to a gas untill the heater hose got hot enght to do it .It replaced the carb complete there was a hi pressure and a low pressure side the low pressure side was what run the truck.I have a book somewhere if I can find it that told every thing you ever wanted to know about lp systems .I will have to look for it I can half way rember how they worked but its been a lot of yrs.One benifittes of lp gas is there is NO carbon build up the oil never get dirty like one on gas dose There is no cabon from combustion or surt.I took a fu engine apart the inside were allmost as clean as new alittle white powedey carbon on top of the pistons.
rubbed it off with a hand held wire brush. the bearing looked like new in them. The kids he had driving took them out and were drag racing them. a stock 350 wont stay together at 5000 rpm for 1/2 hr so goit to rebuild afu of them.

I have an old bus that runs on propane but I'm in the middle of converting it to gas I have the full setup the tank and all. I was thinking about putting it on my truck not sure though. I live in Idaho right outside of Ontario OR. I have started it when it was 12 deg so I dont know how cold it would have to be to not work because I have never had a problem. We want to use the bus for a church the insurance we have wont insure it with propane. We dont want to have to re write the whole church insurance just to run the bus. We can but its easyer to just swap it over. The tank I have even has like 75 gal left in it LOL so I was thinking of just swaping it long enuff to use it all LOL Its way semple to do if someone wanted the set up I might sell it but have no idea what they cost. I jave a xj and would put it on that if I knew how so I cant wait to see if you make this work.

I would really like to know the name of that book to try and track down a copy if you can find it lol.

I wonder how much conversion of fittings and such would have to be done to a bus system such as that to make it work on a smaller scale. Any chance anyone has some pics of these setups? Just curious to get an idea what kind of components are involved and such in a system setup like this.

Do a search there is alot of pages on it.I would like to see how it is set up on a cherokee.If I can get back to Rolla and get a hold of the guy that had the Cherokee and see what they did to it I will post what I find .
