ive just replaced my valve cover gasket hoping to stop the leaks but apparently its the rear main thats leaking. problem is, it drips right onto my exhaust downpipe and stinks like burning oil. and its also making little whiffs of smoke under the hood. is there a temporary way to fix this to where it wont drip onto the exhaust and burn off??? i can live with it leaking because its not that bad (bout the size of a quarter overnight) but its really pissing me off to smell it all the time. any ideas???

Mine does the same thing and I was gonna do a quick fix but i decided fixing it to stop the leak would be better. I would take exhaust heat wrap(that stuff for headers) and wrap that around the exhaust and cover it up with a lot of aluminum foil. Thats my 2 cents.

Same thing has happened to me. Im just letting it be, and checking the oil every week or so. I dont want to pay someone or take the time to do it myself, so its not going to get fixed anytime soon.

Dumb idea, but if you can determine where the drip is coming from you could put an plate below it, so it'll hit the plate then (make sure the plate is angled to some direction away) then run off that. but I dont know if thats possible just my .02

ive considered that heat wrap stuff but i dont know much about it. does it actually insulate the exhaust or does the outside of the tape get hot enough to burn oil off if it landed on it?

i wouldnt put any insulation on it that would absorb the oil... that will just make it worse... mine leaks less after i let it run about a quart low... i live in the perpetual oil cloud...

I'd be more interested in knowing whose oil doesn't leak on their exhaust! Every old Cherokee I've looked at seems to have a permanent stain right where the pipe crosses behind the oilpan...

but it smells so goooood :laugh3:

yeah its kinda embarrasing sittin in traffic at night and having poofs of smoke come out from under your rig and float into your headlight beams. lol.

Just fix the rear main leak the proper way. It won't cost you much if you can do it yourself. The only materials that you'll need are a new seal and oil pan gasket. The rest is an afternoon of elbow grease.
While your hands are dirty, you might as well replace the three oil filter adapter o-rings (also cheap). That way you'll remove another common source of oil leaks.

i dont have anywhere i can do that myself (i live in an apartment) and they freak out when my jeep leaves an oil spot on the parking lot....theyd evict me if i did a rear main fix in the parking lot.

I took a (maybe 12") long piece of flexible aluminum, cut a couple wings into it, attached those wings to the exhaust pipe with hose clamps, wrapped it around loosely and then used another hose clamp to hold it in shape. Gives enough of a heat barrier to let the drops fall free rather than burn up like they used to. I've fixed the rear main, but have yet to tackle the oil filter mount.
Jeep on!
