Glad to hear he is doing better. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. I'd search the yard closely, one of my pooches poisoned himself (with Tannin) chewing on Walnut rinds. I think most every one of my pooches has eaten something that was dead way to long, at one time or another.
Having a hunting dog get a mild case of Distemper isn't unusual, the vaccinations aren't always a hundred percent effective. You mentioned Raccoons in the neighbors yard, they may have brought a Virus in. Some of the signs don't show up until later, like swollen foot pads, trouble swallowing or muscle ticks, even mild convulsions.

They said it was some Salmon poisioning. We go fishing very often so this is very true. He must have got ahold of a rotten salmon. Its ok though, They said he built a immunity to it and can never get this infection again. I guess back in the day they used to get like 20 dogs and force feed them rotten salmon. Only the strong would survive and those were the dogs they would use for hunting... he is doing great..

you just dont get it, I took the dog to a vet. they couldnt tell me anything. came on here to ask a few questions. went back to ANOTHER vet and they figured it out. it didnt have anything to do with you giving me crap. neglect would have been not taking him to the first vet

To answer the original question: Yes. I served in the Army for 3 years.

The rice idea is good, but try mixing some fresh grass clippings in with it.

Why? Because the chlorophyll in grass will help to clear and settle their stomach. I had a dog growing up that would have stomach trouble all the time - and he'd go out and mow the yard on his own. I asked the vet about it, and that was the explanation I'd gotten.

Eating grass for dogs is much like our taking Pepto - although you can expect him to toss it back up in an hour or two. But, it will help to scrub out whatever is ailing him, if it's chemical or an imbalance.

If it's poison or a microbe of some variety, you've got bigger problems - and you should find a different vet. Taking in a fresh log (and a urine sample, if you can convince him to hit a Mason jar...) will help as well - since the vet won't have to figure out how to collect it (and that would definitely unsettle your dog!)
