Glad to hear he is doing better. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. I'd search the yard closely, one of my pooches poisoned himself (with Tannin) chewing on Walnut rinds. I think most every one of my pooches has eaten something that was dead way to long, at one time or another.
Having a hunting dog get a mild case of Distemper isn't unusual, the vaccinations aren't always a hundred percent effective. You mentioned Raccoons in the neighbors yard, they may have brought a Virus in. Some of the signs don't show up until later, like swollen foot pads, trouble swallowing or muscle ticks, even mild convulsions.
