So while at work today all of my co-workers and I went to eat dinner. One of the guys at work bought his son a 1991 Ford Bronco Full Size to drive to and from school. He told me today his son hates the Bronoco so he bought him a Chevy Cavalier. He asked me today if I wanted the Bronco so he didnt have to sell it or leave it in his backyard because I like 4x4 vehicles. He then says "oh by the way Im giving it to you". I thought he was kidding at first but he gave me the title tonight at work. The only tyhing wrong with it he said is that his bonehead son didnt keep up on checking the oil like he was supposed to. My buddy stated that his son may have driven it with little to no oil for a short period of time. He says it still runs good but the Bronco makes a "noise". So I guess Ill have to check it out. I have seen the Bronco and its in great shape. The interior is really nice no cut seats or worn out carpet and the dash is in great shape. The exterior is also good the bumper has a dent in it and there is a small patch of rust on the right rear wheel well. Here are the specs:

1991 Ford Bronco Full Size
White w/ red interior
4x4
auto 5.8L V8 351
BFG All Terrains are at 50%

Anybody know any good websites for these things. Id like to keep it and fix it up a little. It would make a great DD or fun trail rig. Thanks Ryan

Hey, free is free. Doesn't get any better than that.

Dunno that I'd want to keep it around as a DD though. Gas hog and what sounds like a bad, or very potentially unreliable engine....... and it's a Ford. :puke:

Seems to me you should be able to find a decent used engine to swap into it if you really end up liking it...... If you spend $1000 buying the engine and having it installed, you should still be fine investment/value-wise.

Did you end up doing any thing with your XJ? (sell it/trade it?)

No, I still have the XJ I wanted to trade it for a ZJ but no luck but I need parts for it bad. Maybe I can flip the Bronco and get some parts in a trade or sell and get some cashola!!! I kinda like full size Broncos though but we will see the wifey wont be happy having two projects around.

I don't know that fuel economy is all that bad, maybe mid to high teens if you keep it stock, and it has a V-8. :)

Shop around for a used engine before you drag it home.

Oh well it runs, he is just being nice really...its not in bad shape at all I just dont know what kind of damage not having adequate oil in a vehicle does. If it still runs I cant imagine the damage to be that bad.

Basically any part that requires lubrication is now suspect.
Rod and main bearings
Crankshaft
Connecting rods
Wrist pins
Cam and bearings
Hydraulic lifters
Rockers & push rods
Oilpump
Cylinders scored from lack of oil
Oil pump

It's a toss-up. You might get lucky and need nothing more than new rod and main bearings.

Or

You drop the pan and find more crap in the pan than you can imagine.

haha thanks Frank....now Im all sad. Im hoping it wont bad. Ill let you guys know.

Gas Hog? My Wife's 96 FS Bronco, 5.0L, gets 15 in town. Just about the same as my 98 XJ... And IT has a 4" lift and 32s...

For free it can be parted out. What, really, do you have to lose?

Your a true bowtie boy............ cluless about Ford motors! A 351 is a very good motor. The best 351 is the Cleveland but the Windsor is great to. Any motor run with little or no oil is going to need help! I have built a few of these that smoked them bowtie 350's......:D Oh yeah, for the record I ran a SB Ford over 500 miles with a failing oil pump with the last 50 or so with none............ it finally threw a rod...... tuff motors!!

You can not get a Cleveland engine in any modern Ford, just the Windsor. Early (80's vintage) Windors ran like so much garbage and the cure was to use a 302 cam in it... We own Jeeps (2) and Ford. Always have.

The 5.8 is a small block that has a 1.3" taller deck to allow the stroke needed. I do believe the engine was phased out of F150s by 1991 and Exploders in 2001. Could be wrong...

On Topic... At the least the main and rod caps should be pulled to look for damage. I had an oil pump drive rod fail in sub-zero weather and the engine ran, without pressure, for the 4 miles to get to the shop where we fixed it. No damage. I suspect the cold is what saved the day..

Tough motors, but then so is most everything out of Detroit. After all, they have to allow for idiots...

You should have your trusted mechanic check it over. Any work that is over your head, he'll have to clean up anyway. :anon:

check to see how much work needs done to it or what shape the motor is in. Sell the body and build a tube chassie for it no body no worring about rubbing the wheel wells when flexing toss on some monster tires and rock that thing.

Wait a second... about your XJ... What exactly are your plans?

Your response above sure doesn't make it sound like it's been at a shop waiting to be worked on for the last few months like you've been telling me.

ryan free is free bud. keep it as a toy to mess with. turn it into a plow truck for your work, part it out. do whatever.

what parts are you needing for your rig? gears still? gimme a buzz if there is anything i can help ya with...

The F Series and full size Broncos ran Windsor blocks in 5.0 (302) or 5.8 (351) unitl 96. I wish somebody would give me a free Bronco, junk engine or not.
I had a 351 M block that had just above 0 pounds at idle (on a mechanical gauge) oil pressure when hot. Had good pressure with some RPMs. I had to run 20/50 oil in the thing to keep it alive. The crank thrust bearing was so worn out that you couldn't push in the clutch to start the engine-it would break the nose cone off of the starter. I put 20k miles on it that way and was always prepared to hear the sound of engine failure.
Yellas Ford hatred runs deep. I think Henry Ford musta abused him as child or somethin. If you really want to stroke him out, get the Bronco and put a nice big roof rack on it.

I dont know what your getting at here?? I would still need to pay the guy for parts on my Jeep. And yes it has been at a shop.

yeah Mike I need to get some parts still Ill text you tommorow with whats up with that ordeal.

Well it looks like a firefighter I know has a 1994 Ford Bronco that was rolled and just crushed the cab. The engine runs fantastic and has new 31's on it and nice chrome wheels. He parts out cars and then crushes them. So he said I can take the 94 from him and take what I want and make mine better. So we will see what happens, this thing may turn out to be a cool project yet.

So we're not waiting on the shop to finish another project, we're waiting on you to pay for your work?
