Any of ya had a local shop build axles??

Ya I'm in Longmont as of first of October so be right by me as well. So far everyone has suggested crawlertech.

Mike, Crawlertech would be a good option for many things, but I think you can save a lot of money doing some easy things yourself (and would benefit from knowing the axle) such as putting everything from the C's out on.

If'n my roomate actually gets his 60 under his and is able to move it down to Denver anytime soon, I could easily help you assemble things in my garage. Assembling everything from the C's out is cake once you've done it. I'd look at outsourcing the gear setup and the actual mount fab. Other than that its easy to run through things. I've got a press and plenty of tools. We could have shafts in, out bearings taken out and new bearings pressed in for things like hubs, brakes, etc. and the axle "ready to roll" essentially in an afternoon or two.

Save where you can, so you can put into other things later. Josh and crew do great work...but shop time is still damn expensive.

For sure, you've been around it all with Truggy so I had kinda assumed you did.

I was thinking about stock housing vs. non.

I've never had a shop build anything so maybe proracedriver can pipe up since he's worked at Crawlertech :D

You might save some money as well if you go with an aftermarket housing, since unless you do it...they've got to still spend the shop time to cut everything off, and clean it all up.

God knows that was a couple DAYS of work for me just doing that. Hell I was wire wheeling and flap disc'ing on my d60 for an entire day just to get it "clean".

Once again this isn't something I'm knowledgeable of offhand. With an aftermarket setup all you have to do essentially is line things up to make sure the housing is straight, choose your camber, and burn it in.
 
I was really looking at the 9 housings with 60 outers, would be LP but the housings and parts availability is cheap. Plus a clean slate to get everything tossed on. Just don't know if the sixty9 would be strong enough.

You can get HP center sections for the 9" housing. The supported pinion on the 9inch makes for a very stout setup despite not having a massive ring and pinion. There are also a multitude of gearing options for the 9inch.

I agree, I would start with a fabricated housing. The RuffStuff housings are relatively affordable and pretty damn sweet.

Yeah a 9" might be a goof route too. Though I'd still only go HP.

You could buy a Hi9 drop out for it, and that would take care of gears, locker, and install...but its not the cheapest. But, you'd only need to worry about outers, not the center chunk.

I found a good deal on some damn near complete spider 9's but they are only tj width and I was really wanting some more size than that.
The 9's seem like a good option because of the endless possibilities and parts. Plus one spare 3rd member and I could fix either diff if they blew up (granted I keep both diffs same spline count). Just unsure if that makes up for not having a 14b or not. Lots if thinkin to do I guess.
 
Dude the custom 9inch was THE axle to build up until the last couple of years where the big horse power Ultra4 craze really took off.

The Ford 9" has a much larger pinion gear, its fully supported, and allows for better pinion/ring gear contact. The slightly smaller diameter ring gear vs a Dana 60 isn't an issue. Its the same reasons the 14B is able to hold up to the same (or more) abuse as much larger 1ton axles.

14bolt rears are the shit and can be built relatively cheap, but you'll need to shave it unless you like having an anchor under your rig. My unshaved 14bolt was an anchor with 42" tall tires. Doing a full shave (including turning the ring gear) allows you to run 35's with a 14bolt and not be dragging an anchor.

If you're talking matched front and rear axles I would go custom 9" and be done. Unless for some craziness you're planning on running a monster V8 and looking to do BV Carnage full throttle.

I'm planning a 9" set for my JK eventually (like years out unfortunately). Full float with 60 spindles out back and 60 outers up front. I'll be able to run 35 spline shafts front and rear no problem. I might do a 14 bolt in the back but I really want the full custom housing and the 14bolt drop outs are not only really pricey but questionable in their quality.
 
That's a great price, but still 5g's is a lot of coin to drop at once.

If you do go for it Mike LMK as you can have them freight shipped to my work. We have a freight account so it should be a lot cheaper to have it sent here than to your house.
 
I think as much as I keep finding some pretty good deals imma wait. I ways just jump at deals and end up not happy. So imma wait and take my time. No rush for
This build anyway.
