Another Question of chop tops

Ok. I'm sure this has been posted somewhere and YES I did try to search it but all I kept coming up with was a bunch of crap. So this guy who lives down the road from me has about a mid 80's or so 2 door Cherokee. I could probably get it for cheapbut I have no idea what could be wrong with it. I really really want to cut the back half of it off like I have been seeing people do because I think it not only looks badass but it would definitely get some double takes. My question is do you think it would be possible to get a canvas company or auto upolstry place to a a snapon or off half cab roof for it? I think it would be nice to take it out on bad weather days and not have to worry about parking in the shop for fear of the elements getting to it. Or I could just say screw it and rip out the interior and rhino line everything and not have to worry about that. But anyways could some of you who have done this mod (2 dr or 4 dr) show me some pics? Also if you have some pics of how you did it that would be gnarly. Thanks a whole lot.

Re: XJ Ragtop

I am certain that you could find a boat canvas shop that would do the work for you. And I am sure that it could be done VERY nicely.

However, I suspect you would have WAY more money in the rag top, than you would have in the rest of the truck!! This kind of work is NOT cheap if it is done well. You could make a simple bikini top for very little money though (keep the sun or rain off of ya).

Stick to the rhino linning concept, you wouldn't want to put it up and down very often anyway!!

Yup it can be done. Do not use a boat company, most of them cannot do the job. Find an automotive place that make custom tops. The top will be the most expensive part of the job by far, if you get a weather proof top that is. I have pics....but not with me now, do a search on XJDB.com, they are out there. I also did Rhino on my floors....great stuff.

Re: XJ Ragtop

Waterproofing is over rated. My front doors are cut down and the rear doors are stripped of all glass and hardware, and I park the Jeep outside with a car cover on it when it's at home. Rain isn't a problem. Now, I don't drive mine every day, so I don't have to drive it to work. Driving it in rain isn't a problem either, since I do still have the roof on it.

I'd leave the roof on it before I went through the hassle of getting a canvas top and taking it on and off regularly. I've had boats with full canvas and it can be a bitch to get all the canvas up if it's anything other than a warm day.

X2

My full top goes on in the Winter, and off in the Spring. IF I need to drive it in the rain when the full top is not on, I have a bikini top that I use.

BUT

When it was a DD, that full, tight, weather proof top held up and kept the water and cold air out.

Re: XJ Ragtop

didnt the AEV african have some set up like this

Ok. My last thread on this was hijacked but its cool I'll just ask on this one. The 2 door I was talking about chopping and having a ragtop built. Well the same guy has got a 4 door I could get for less and the engine is in better shape. (Dunno why?) But I was thinking it would be cool to cut the tops off the rear doors and weld them shut and smooth them out. Then cut the top all the way up to the rear of the front doors and fab a removeable rear panel. Has anyone sen this done. It would be SUPER unique. Hit me with some opinions...

if it would be super unique, what makes you think any one has seen this done?

IMHO, if you want it, do it and post up on how you do it along the way with lots of pics because i think it might be cool ( not for me, but cool )

Sorry I didn't clarify that. What I was thinking to myself I did not type it down. I meant that it would be super unique around my area. Considering theres not a lot of car action (4x4 or other) within a few hours drive of me. Mostly a bunch of hicks with their skidders.

I wouold still like to see if anyone has done this. But yea when I do it I'll Definitely have some pics to post.
