I did a search on this, and i couldnt find exactly what i was wondering. I'm planning on building a stroker from a 97 block, and believe me I've been reading all I can from everywhere I could, for about the last 6 months. It's never going to get done if I dont get started assembling the parts. I fugured there was no better place to start than the base of the build, the crank. From what I've read I should want the 12wt crank, but what I am wondering now is where is the best place to get one? If I get one from a junkyard, should I do anything to protect it in the long run(machined, new bearings)? Would I be better off just going to Advance and buying a new or reconditioned one, or should I buy from online? I'm looking for the best price for the best product, I dont want to cheap out on anything, but I am a college student and value is of high importance. I am having to control my excitement in anticipation of finally getting the ball rolling on this! I'm sure I will have more questions as I progress, thanks for any and all input!

For my stroker, I was lucky enough to find a complete 4.2L engine on eBay for $5.50. The crankshaft turned out to be in perfect condition and didn't need any grinding.

Had I been in a little more of a hurry to complete the engine, I would have bought a reconditioned crank from Advanced Auto. The price is right in line with what it would cost to get a used crank, get it reground, and buy matching bearings.

There are places online that sell reconditioned rods also for about $25 a piece. I would go that route for sourcing the rods.

:rof: ..... not real most of the time the big end is all that is conditon(imperfect round hole made more close or put back in spec..........)

price and the seller:eyes: :dunno: not much of a E-bay......er

I took my used rods to the machinist, and he highly recommended reconditioning the big end. That cost $60 itself. I wouldn't blink for a second about spending $127 for a set of reconditioned rods. You have the piece of mind that the rods will not be the weak link in your engine.

Look for a 1972-80 FSJ at your favorite junkyard. At the very least you should have the crank checked by your machinist. It would really suck to build a motor and have the crank turn to small pieces of metal after all that hard work and $$$$.
