An Odd Request

If it happens, it won't be until later in the year, but since now is the time many of you will be traveling on vacations, here's my request:

I may be abandoning the east coast and moving west toward the end of the year. If I do so, I'll want to transport a significant number of "the fleet" from Connecticut to wherever I decide to settle. Some of them are not running, so driving those is not even an option. I need a transporter service.

But I don't know how/where to find one. While you're traveling, if you happen to find yourself running next to a private car hauler (not the ones delivering new cars), please write down the company name and (if there is one) phone number and send it to me when you can. The private ones should be easy to spot because they'll have a mixture of makes and years on board.

Many thanks.

I may be getting into the RV Transport biz soon and am going to be buying a multi-car trailer for the auto transport in winter gig. I would be more then happy to help out if you give enough notice so I can make sure I am in the area.

Check out the back of autoweek or Hemmings motor news, they used to list quite a few of them.

Where, may I ask, are you relocating to?

I'll be delivering an XJ to Montana and doing some scouting then, as well as more scouting before and/or after Moab. At the moment, I'd say most likely Montana, with Idaho and New Mexico more or less tied for second place.

Gotta find someplace where I can afford enough land that the neighbors don't think 12 XJs and MJs in the yard constitutes a virtual used car lot. Yuppies don't understand automania -- they just drive 'em, and then hollar at the service writer (my brother) when the Beemer breaks.

Here's a classic: A couple of weeks ago a young guy (early to mid 20s) brings in his fairly new Beemer with a BAD skip. Brother listens to engine looks at records, sees the kid has a special performance kit (like a Jet chip) that, among other things, disables the rev limiter. Tells tech to check the CPU, then look at the valves.

Naturally, tech knows better and runs every test he can think of, finding nothing. Brother tells him again to look at the valves. All bent. THEN the tech runs a read-out on the ECU. Turns out that particular ECU records over-revs, even though the limiter is bypassed. The kid ran it up to over 8500 RPM. So my brother got the job of telling the kid he's on the hook for a few thou of engine work, because over-rev damage isn't covered by warranty. Of course the kid swore up and down he never had it over 7 grand. Sure.

Why do I get this mental image of you in a metal shack up in the mountains mumbling to yourself and wearing a tinfoil hat? Brrrr, scary. TC

It's not tinfoil, it's sheet copper with a lead liner. :D

We'd love to accomodate you here in CO, but we have too many damn Kalifornicators and Texans here as it is.

CO is full.

Seriously though, I have a friend here in CO who does auto transport, but you will want to find someone close to your departure or arrival destinations so that your "dead head" fees are reduced.

Trust me Eagle, I'm not laughing AT ya, I know exactly what you mean. In fact I may well be the guy in the shack on the other side of the ridge one of these days. :) Maybe we'll hookup and drag us back one of them wimmon fron the village down below ifin we get lonley. TC :looney:

Hey Eagle, my hillbilly neighbors are losing their property to the bank, I live in a little coal mining town called Black Diamond, it's in washington at the foot of mount Rainier. It's about 2 acres, has a lake in the back yard, there's no emissions here and I could use a neighbor with an XJ bone yard!

Eagle me and PUV will be out west in a year or two as well. NYC is not the place I like to be in any longer, I need open space and a place where I can live without being taxed for breathing.
