An Interesting Look at the XJ by Hagerty

Kind of an historical review of the origins and accomplishments of the XJ.

One of the more remarkable points was the fact that AMC somehow managed to make a vehicle that wasn't ugly. Right around the 9 minute mark begins a brief discussion of that subject, along with pics of AMC's previous design achievements.

Interesting. I had no idea the XJ was quicker to 60 and over the quarter mile than the top-of-the-line GTI of the day.

They must have locked the AMC designers in a closet somewhere (or maybe a dumpster?) to keep them away from the XJ, but it's good they did - whoever did mastermind the visual design created something timeless...

Thanks for finding and posting that.

Also interesting that it did better on the skidpad than a Mercedes 190.

It all adds up to why folks are so fond of these things. They really do represent an accomplishment in the automotive world, and it is worthwhile to put in the effort to keep them on the road.

Put 190 HP in perspective at that time. The Mustang had 225 HP, the Camaro 235 hp. Don't know the torque values. In someways the XJ was a stilted 4WD Station wagon. Also, a long hatchback.
