So I have been having some electrical issues and they sim to be stemming from an intermittent failure of the alternator. So I am going to be ordering an alternator this evening to get it fixed.

My question: How many amps can you run with the stock wiring?

I have seen alts from alt builders that put out up to 160 amps and would like to get a little more power than the stock 90 amp alt.

Thanks!

Not sure on a max on stock wiring. But thick 4g copper wire is cheap these days.
Alternator power, block to ground, battery to ground.

What year is your jeep? The 91-00 can take utilize the 136 amp 5.9 zj alternator
It's cheap and readily available
The renix jeeps can utilize the 140 amp.Chevy unit or 120 amp limited alt
Stock wiring has never let me down yet

Thanks flores!

I will go with the 136 amp then and rewire when I have some exra jing!

Oh and mine is a 98.

It sounds like the brushes are sticking...

Hypoid, do you have a way to remedy this? I have not worked on any alternators before, my buddy was really good with them though.

I would imagine it would involve pulling th brushes out and cleaning with contact cleaner?

This will give you an idea of what you are into.

Once upon a time, if the commutator was good, you could buy new brushes pretty cheap. Very seldom, was there any major problem with the commutator or windings.
