Anybody recommend a good bank for a checking account? I'm sick of CHASE's BS. Ive been looking at Ally, but a little worried with them being AKA GMAC. What I do like is the fact that you can use any ATM nation wide, and they will reimburse you the fee. They only charge you a $9 fee for an overdraft. There is no min $ amount needed to open or maintain the account, and earning interest on your daily balance is cool too. What I don't like is if you have cash to deposit there is no way to deposit it, and currently there is no smart phone app. Also on the off chance I would need more than $500 in cash in a single day I'd be SOL.

Have you looked at any of your locally owned and operated banks? I've been with the same bank since the early 90's and my folks have since late '79 and have rarely had to worry about shenannigans in that time period.

Go through a credit union, better options for high interest savings, no fee checking accounts, lower average fees for overdraft, etc.

Yeah the problem with using a local bank is if you go out of town you are stuck with paying an ATM fee if you need some cash. That was the reason I originally went with CHASE to begin with. ATMs everywhere.

We have no credit unions locally so again Im stuck with ATM fees to withdraw cash. That was the big thing that I like about Ally it's pretty easy to find a fee free ATM (there are 6 here in town), but even if you can't they will reimburse you the fee that was paid.

I like chase, and I love my iPhone, it will find me chase atm's anywhere :) I figure as long as you have $$ in the bank and your smart enough to Not overdraw on your account there will be no problems with chase.

Go to a local credit union, mine and most have free withdrawals from SUM network ATMs which are everywhere, plus they reimburse me any fees I'm charged

While I agree not to over draft your account occasionally I have to make use of a planned overdraft to make ends meet. The last time I paid all my bills for the week (online), and had to write a check knowing the bills would be covered, but the with the check I would take a hit. However when the check was cashed a few days after the other bills where paid they decided to post the check before the other transactions nailing me multiple times instead of the once. However that is only part of the problem. There is only one ATM in a 25 mile radius, and finding it out of cash is a common occurrence. Constant trouble with my debit card in the fact that the transaction fails, and it'll take multiple tries to get it to go through. The last time thank god my buddy was with me because I ended up having to have him pay for the groceries, and then we went straight to the bank where I was able to withdraw the amount, and pay him back Takes them forever to post gas station purchases to my account. Lastly I've been trying to have my wife added to my account for over a year, but they keep telling us that she owes them money for something. They give us a number to call to have it taken care of, but when we call they can find no record of her owing anything.

Again there are no local credit unions available. Unless I want to drive 30 miles to the next town.

USAA..

If you understand how banking works then youd have a better knowledge of where your money is going and why different things work the way they do...

1) Online bill pay most times will never come out of the account fully for up to 4 days.... hence the notice they give you as you submit, example of notice ; your payment has posted but may take up to x amount of hours/ days to post to your account... every bill I pay online tells me when the money will be taken from my account, usually two days after unless its paid on a friday or saturday, then its usually posted on a tuesday.

2) When someone cashes a check its basically like using debit, its then and now. The cash is taken out to cover what you have written it for right when you run it through the machine.

3) If you have problems with your card running ask for a new one? They are free...

So yes, if you paid a bill online yesterday and wrote a check today to cash, the check would go through first, at least thats how I have found Chase to work... And I have personal and Business/ payroll accounts through them, no problems what so ever

Sounds like you need to get better money management skills? Because whatever bank you go to if you over draw your account its going to be the same story over and over

Exactly.

I don't mean to bash on you, I understand times are rough and money is tight.
After many overdrafts I learned to manage my money better. For instance I don't eat out nearly as often, I don't drink unless it's a weekend and not in large quantitys. I no longer impulse buy, and I learned to combine my trips to save gas. That's just what I do to conserve and it works for me, maybe look at where your $$ goes and you might be able to cut some corners too.

I have wellsfargo and never paid a fee for 2 years, they have overdraft protection or something and atms that let you deposit cash without envelops or anything.

I'm a big believer in credit unions, they are a great way to build credit and have local people to talk to. People recommend getting a credit card to build credit but i disagree with that. When in the Marine Corps i joined a credit union on base and had 3 or 4 small loans. They were about 1000 to 1800 bucks a piece. Nothing big at all but they helped out in the long run and a thousand times better than a credit card. Hard to believe you dont have one near you but i suppose its possible. I'm with USAA now and i love it. But you have to be a member of the military as far as i know (or former)

I personally despise wells fargo. for me teh straw that broke the camel's back was the fee just to check your balance at a non wells fargo atm.

I also am a fan of credit unions. All the way. but I find that the next best thing is a local independently owned bank.

by far the best bank I've ever dealt with. It won't help with the ATM thing, but almost all debit card transactions are showing in my account by the time I get to the car and check the account on my phone.

The only catch is that you have to have some military affiliation. Either be a veteran or your mom or dad has to be a veteran.

I go through them for EVERYTHING

find a good credit union or community bank. i work for a smaller community bank and usually if you become friends with the branch manager and tellers....usually (at least for the customers we like) we will waive fees and get stuff like checks, dep slips, etc. faster for customers....always good to have the bank on your side...

I have ZERO military affiliation. For account purposes, it doesn't matter. For added benefits, insurance, etc it is required. Otherwise not necessary.
