Anyone who knows my dad and may interact with him once in a while will have to keep this under their hat. Mainly Brad and Molly, but if anybody else sees him, keep it quiet.

PatM@nBrew and I are planning on building dad a 1911 over the next couple years slowly but surely. I've been doing a lot of research on fitting 1911 parts and I'm pretty sure I can handle it. We plan on splitting the cost of the parts and I'll do the building.

The company I have found to source frame and slide from have some killer options when it comes to frame style, size, material and serial numbers along with custom options on slide serrations, cuts, engravings and logos. They also have a number of small parts to compliment your options like the cuts on the mainspring housing.

Dad was in the Marine Coprs from 1974-78. I plan on dad's Government model having the Eagle, Globe and Anchor on the slide behind the rear cocking serrations along with Semper Fidelis engraved in the slide. I'll get grips with a Marine Corps theme, but need to find out what finish he would like on the frame and slide before deciding what color the grips will be. I don't know what their limits are on custom serial numbers, but they require at least one letter and number. I'd like to have each frame I build have JF1 or JF2 or JF3 as the beginning of the serial number with significant initials and dates for the rest of the number. So my dad's number would ideally be JF2PLF31756.

I plan on building one for myself to get the experience and hopefully have a more refined knowledge on the second go-round so dad's is a nicer fitting piece.

I have a suspicion that it will solicit a similar response from our dad. The plan is to have it done for Father's Day 2015 but if it gets done sooner, he'll get it sooner. Its gonna be hard enough keeping it from him in the first place, impossible if it's done and not "the right time" yet. For a gift like that, it's always the right time.

I run a bunch of leupolds, a few 6.5x20 and a 8.5x25, mark 4's. The nightforces are really nice but I can buy two nice leupolds for that price. If you plan on clicking the scope you should stick with a lot better quality scopes.

Those lower power scope are nice but when it's time to reach out there a Nightforce NXS 12-42X56mm is a sweet setup. A I also have a straight 45X Leupold one of my BR rifles, very nice glass.

I've been thinking about building another rifle, something like a 6.8-308 or 6.8-300 Sav. basically a short action 270 cal cartridge and not a Magnum anything.

Because its different, I have a Rem.700 6.8spc and like it but it needs a little more case to make it better. And why hasn't anyone done this, 22-250 .243 Win, .250 Sav, .260 Rem, 7mm-08, .308 Win, .338 Fed. Where's the .270 cal option? Yes I know the 22-250 & 250 Sav are slightly shorter cases but still close and in the same general family.

The bullet selection has never been there for long range. I ran some 150 bergers in my .270 win. You should look up wildcat bullets, they made a rebated boattail that was an awesome preformer. We need to organize a WI shoot!

The rebated boat tails are mostly marketing hype, just something else that can have an effect on accuracy. Bullets steer from the back, screw up the heel and they fly all over the place. I want something different and it's more about building it I like.

This! If only ammo could be found. I'm currently running low on .40 & .380. I've got 80rds of .243 sitting. Which by other standards is not a lot, but since I don't shoot it often, I'm sitting good. I've got a brick of .22 sitting but I can't replace it. Hell, I really can't replace anything.

A few buddies have used them out past a mile with insane accuracy. When done right they work great. They had a 169gr .277 that they couldn't keep in stock, bc way above anything else on the market

Varmint stock. Varmint barrel. Does it have the X-mark Pro trigger? Is your barrel threaded with a cap on it? Looks like it's a long sucker. At least 24". What kinda glass you got on top there?

Also looks like an ADL. All loading and unloading goes through the top. Unless I just can't see the trap door.

Quite correct. Unfortunately it has the standard x-mark trigger so that will be one of the first upgrades. Barrel is not threaded, 26" bull barrel. Optic is a cheap 4-12x40, will get replaced soon as well. Got a pretty good deal on the rifle so can't really complain. Should be a good start to a mild mid-longer range shooter.

If I could build my ultimate R700...it would be .300WM, 22" stainless fluted bull bbl, glass & pillar bedded B&C stock, Timney or Jewel trigger breaking around 3#, 4-12 or 4-16x50 Greybull Precision glass, AICS style box mag system, fluted bolt with a BO knob, bipod and about 2000 handloaded rounds to play with.

If I could build my ultimate R700...it would be .300WM, 22" stainless fluted bull bbl, glass & pillar bedded B&C stock, Timney or Jewel trigger breaking around 3#, 4-12 or 4-16x50 Greybull Precision glass, AICS style box mag system, fluted bolt with a BO knob, bipod and about 2000 handloaded rounds to play with.

So far I'm planning on a tactical style synthetic stock with aluminum bedding bock, will do additional bedding, trigger as close to 3# as possible maybe a little under, some bolt work with larger bolt knob, haven't decided on glass yet but looking for something in the 4-16 or 10-20 adjustable power, I like the longer barrel but may opt for a different twist barrel, will be threaded with a break, bipod, and will probably eventually have the action trued. Will take a while but will be sweet when it's completed.

Not to rain on your parade, but if you're looking at a new barrel and new stock, you're pretty much building a whole new rifle... Personally, I'd either keep the one you've got and build one or I would sell this one and build off of a new action. These are just the thoughts of a cheap bastid, so take it FWIW.

I know that's a popular consensus amongst the hardcore 700 guys. I also know it's easier to add parts than to build from scratch. I'm still with you on your plans. I'm likely in the same boat as you if I ever start changing stuff on my .243 for .308 components. Which would only take a barrel at this point.

You only need 1000rds because by then the barrel will be shot out. I have tesed 10,000's of rounds in 300 Win Mags and right at 900-1000 they go away in accuracy. Also with the short bbl and a Win Mag you better get a good muzzle break if you plan on enjoying shooting it much. For a Mag system I prefer Seekins Precision since the mags are longer so you can you something besides 180gr bullets.

I don't think 1000 yds will be coming up. Even if I ever got to hunt out west, I would do my best to stalk something inside of 600yds. Muzzle break would be a great addition for a lot of shooting. I hadn't really thought about that.

But hey, 1000rds through a factory bbl should give me plenty of time to save up the cash to buy a custom bbl to shoot the other 1000

If the barrel gets replaced, it will be quite a was down the road. As for the stock that is generally one of the first things to get replaced on any rifle build as one stock never fits every person. Now I'm not talking spending crazy money on a stock but also want a decent stock with the aluminum bedding block. This won't be an all out build right off the get go, will take some time so things may change down the road as new and improved items come to market.
