After Head swap getting loud lifter tick

as always, I agree with Gradon's advice-- It only takes one good overheat to damage an exhaust valve and give you your results.

The noise you are hearing could easily be from exhaust gasses being forced past a cracked valve or damaged valve seat.

this poor thing became mine after the P.O. overheated it "only one time" and continued to drive it making a "ticking noise at idle" and a "really rough idle until you get it up to speed."

What exactly am I seeing in this picture? I think I'm done driving it for now. I'll get rides and try to start taking it apart this weekend.

..any recommendations while I have the block disassembled like Johnny number 5. ?? I was thinking about have the head ported and the IM port matched with it. Are there headers that fit close to how the stock ones do? I already have a magnaflow full exhaust system... but stock headers.

Well guys, I got first hand experience-second-opinion of someone else today. He's had a cracked valve before. He took a piece of paper to my exhaust to see if it would be vacuumed in (he didn't let it get sucked in).

In between exhausts it would suck in the paper. He said it was a cracked valve for sure because on on the vacuum stroke it was bleeding vacuum through the exhaust, therefore sucking at the paper he held to the end of the exhaust.

Spanks a bunch Gradon and shorty.

While I'm in there with the head off I'm going to go ahead and get it ported with the IM.

Also, I told him I still had the stock headers. He said that in and of itself could over a long period of time cause a valve to burn out due to the increased input but lacking output on the exhaust. He also said that running rich, which I am since I never tuned it (and you can tell from the build up of black soot in the exhaust) would add to the case.
Throw in the overheating all night long on a long trip and I think this all adds up.

I will be adding headers to it. Any suggestions? I'm going to fork over the money for the MSD 6A ignition from R-R with my rebate money.

Forget the MSD box for now - the stock setup is fine for what you have. And don't go crazy on the porting - match to the intake, a little work in the bowls, the bottom of the port behind the intake valve, and that is all.

I'm afraid I don't understand your jargon of porting. Then again I'm not too familiar with it.

What are bowls?

The bottom of the port behind the intake valve...

I'm not well knowledged in the visuals of these areas.

Then DO NOT attempt this yourself! It is very easy to make it flow worse if you don't know what you are doing.

I'm not doing it myself. A shop is doing it for me. So enlighten me as to what it is regardless.

So if I run 24 lb fuel injectors with a stroker, headers and full magnaflow exhaust I DON'T need an MSD. ??

That doesn't sound right. I'm buying it for piece of mind. I just blew a valve and running rich can over time cause that. Look at me now pulling the whole engine apart and replacing things. I think it's worth it, especially with an in-store credit at R-R I'm not going to waste.

I don't see where you have any need for a multiple spark style ignition system to be completely honest. The benefits of it are found in it's ability to create a longer duration spark kernal and, when used in conjunction with a coil that can produce a stronger spark, produce a spark that can overcome the increased pressures of highly modified compression ratios.

It seems as though you are basing your needs on a couple erroneous theories.

1. rich mixtures don't run hotter-- the extra fuel actually helps cool the combustion chamber

2. free flowing exhausts (within reason) don't cause burned valves-- when everything else functions as designed, (cooling system, ignition timing, and fuel delivery) your engine can remove any excess heat transferred to the valve and seat.

If you can't find anything else to spend the $$ on, the MSD box won't HURT your engine, but I don't see any benefit to it either.

as is always the case, don't trust anything I have said unless and until you have researched it and found it to be true-- everybody makes mistakes and I'm still waiting on my coffee maker to wake up:roll:

Always put hot water in the coffee pot. It speeds the process like you wouldn't believe.
If I put cold water in there it can take 17 minues. Warm or hot water, it's done in about 5. World of difference. Just like a 6AL MSD ignition system...

You ever like to take the pot out from under it so you can let the hot water build up in the coffee filter to stir the coffee around? Kind of like you're your own little barrista. ?? And then walk off to do something else and forget about it?

THAT sucks.
