Adding criuse control to a XJ that don't have it

Just had a great idea -pat on the back- you need switches for a 98 and you have extras for a 99 that are useless to you. (not cracked I hope)
I have switches for a 98 that are of no use to me.
We could swap, I send you my 98 and you send me your 99.
Each pays his own shipping, we both end up happy :-)
I could use some spares, I keep my Jeeps a long time.

That's a great idea :). I'd definately like to do that. Whenever i get mine, i'll inspect it to make sure it's not cracked. We can trade then (i should get it by the end of next week).

You may have the solution right there.
What would happen if you trimmed those ears and replaced them with the switches?
Is it possible that the whole thing would work?

It might work...assuming i can just trim the ears off and re-install it in the new wheel. The clockspring is the variable i can see screwing that idea up. The clockspring w/cruise could be intended for an airbag with a different model number than my airbag/clockspring combination.

I can look in my FSM tomorrow....they might have something about that.

Here's a picture of the backside of the airbag i've got (same style). It looks like there might be enough room to trim the rubber and make it work.

I've put the kit in my 98. What you get is what appears to be the same part as a 99+ air bag cover. You put your existing air bag (pictured above) into the new cover. Then you install the switches along side it. I've also heard that the 99+ switches (while physically identical) are different from the 97-98 switches. Get some 98 switches and a 99+ air bag cover, and you'd be set I'd imagine.

I'm on the right track for the switches. Is the newer airbag cover just a cosmetic difference? It hardly seems worthwhile to spend $200 on a cover for the airbag when you could just trim the existing one (if that's the case).

What do you have to loose? If it doesn't work, you get a cover.
Hard to tell from a picture, I think it was made to trim :-)
You go slowly, se how the switches fit, continue.

I don't think there is a problem with the closkspring. The two units look identical in everything except for the extra wires for the CC.
Your clockspring has two wires for the bag and the horn. The new one will have three, horn, bag, CC. No sweat.

Exactly..i don't have anything to lose. I already found someone on JU that's parting out a 98....i'll get the rest of the CC parts from him (an extra set of 97-98 switches). This is shaping up. I'm looking forward to getting in the garage and tinkering on it :).

Any luck on tinkering with the cruise setup? I'm contemplating the same swap-in project, but I'm not sure about the airbag cover either, as I've also got a 98. I'd like to see a few more pics if anybody has any.

i did the swap on a 98. Get the cruise control module that fits under the hood. it simply plugs in. get the clockspring. also plugs in. get a new steering wheel cover and cruise buttons. they simply plug in. swap complete. i spent $80 on ebay parts instead of getting raped by jeepsrus.

I just did mine tonight :)...wasn't bad at all. I'm very cautious and i'm never in a hurry (i like my garage) so it took me about 2.5 hrs. If you're patient, i think anyone with some mechanical ability could handle this job. The person fell through on JU...so i just bought a kit through Jeepsareus. The douche i bought the steering wheel from just got back to me two days ago (i bought it on 17 June). I doubt i'll ever see the parts from that. Go ebay!!

Before (with me showing some leg).

Cool, thanks a lot. That is interesting though, because I've got a 98, and I definately have the smaller air bag cover with the blank cruise plates. Now I know I won't have to buy the air bag or cover.

Question...are the cruise switches supposed to have some sort of illumination? One would assume so, because you can't make them out at night (in my case at least).

I want to try this on my 94. I don't yet know anything about how to do it. I will do this in ultracheap style - I will get all of the parts myself from pick n pull. I have two questions:

1. Where can I find instructions on exactly what parts I need to pull, where to locate them on the donor car, what years have compatible parts, and other details on how to assemble them into my rig.

2. Do ya think it would be possible to fit in a newer steering wheel with the buttons on it? I don't really like the controls on the stalk.

Thanks
G

That's what i was originally looking at doing. I can tell you that i really don't regret spending the extra money to get a brand new kit (i'm glad i went ahead and did it up right). If you want to try putting together a kit, have at it. I gave up after a couple potential sellers fell through.

It was so much easier/better to get an all inclusive kit with parts that i didn't have to worry about working.

In your case, the cruise control kit is relatively cheap ($170) compared to mine that was around $400.
Jeepsareus.com has the instruction sheets (it has the parts breakdown in the back).

I dont mean to be an ass or anything but I got a generic cruse control kit from checker auto parts it cost $100 and was very easy to install the only thing is it has a little control panel instead of the blinker type control.
