AC problem with mom sentra....

My mom drives a 98 nissan sentra and has been having AC problems lately.

When it is really humid and hot outside the AC wont even turn on! This only happens when it is very humid, though.

Another thing is, when the AC is on the car looses a considerable amount of power. I know that happens with older cars but its quite a bit of power loss...

Any idea why things things are happening? Thanks

I don't have an explanation for the humidity, but AC in general causes a good bit of power loss, I think like 10-20%. It's basically like a supercharger, just without the power gain.
