Hello all! I am new here and was wondering if you could help. The downpipe on my wife's XJ (my future toy) appears to be pinched/bent just below the exhaust manifold from a previous accident. I need to replace the downpipe with the rest of the exhaust which has started to rust through. All that I have been able to find is a header or a cat back. What about the intermediate pipe from the manifold to the cat? Is there anyone that makes these or do I have to go to an exhaust shop and have it custom made? Thanks for any/all comments.

The down tube is a frequent question for new owners. Here's my post shortly after I got my XJ. Unfortunately there is not a replacement on the market for the "newer" XJ's. I do not know where "new" begins, but my 97 qualifies as new. Your only options are:
1) Live with it - it came that way from the factory so how bad could it be?
2) Brola headers with new down tube, big bucks. $500+ but really cool.
3) Have a muffler shop bend a new tube, I haven't priced this option.

For options on exhaust check out Dino's page

For his experience with changing out the down pipe with a fabricated one and then switching to the Borla exhaust, read his modifications page.

That pinch doesn't look like the one the factory did. Also I believe that the change to the low pinion front axle in 99 was to do away with the factory pinch wasn't it? I know my 2000 doesn't have it, or the precats.

Anybody else know if the area in question in the picture looks like damage or factory crimp for drive shaft?

I know I crimped mine a tad on a full stuff w/sway bar disconnected, never did that again. I could see the 1" long additional dimple it put in, glad the the front end came straight up and did not move to the side any...

The 99' models still had HP 30 and yes they have the pinch in the downtube.XJAY1999

Just would like to add my full 2.5" custom bent system from header to tail pipe was 250 total. A hell of a deal and I love it with the flowmaster 50 series + $80 = $330 the price of a mufler back 2.5". It sounds nice and powerfull, but not too loud.

Gotcha beat.....how about 2 1/4 Quiet Flow System from Walker/ Dynomax with (2) O2 Sensors from Manifold to TailPipe for $320 shipped to your door.

$60 for down pipe
$60 x 2 O2 Sensors = 120
$63 for Walker Dynomax High Flow Converter
$47 for Walker Dynomax Quiet Flow Exhaust
$32 for 2 1/4 TailPipe
All with factory specs and hangers

$322 with Free Shipping

And no I dont work for them...just thought i would pass along a good deal.
Im doing the system for my 97 4.0SE

sounds like a good deal, but I wanted 2.5" for the coming stroker and I wanted it done for me. I dont have the time it takes to put an exaust on and fix all the leaks. Which reminds me I do still need to fix the leak on my 5.0 mustang. I also like the $63 cat, I might go get one because I dont have one now.

Got any part #'s on that 2 1/4 Quiet Flow System from Walker/ Dynomax with (2) O2 Sensors from Manifold to TailPipe? I have had no luck on their website.

Just cut and paste into the search window.

Most of the parts are not in stock so youll you will have to order then but remember shipping and tax is free.

They network with other companies to get a wide selection of parts so most of the #'s are not in the store, but only available online.

so...what is that downpipe you speak of and how is it better than the stock one? i thought the borla or custom were the only solutions for the crimps...thanks
