96 xj sport 5.3 swap

Great gatsby!!

i have learned the the tourque app can be tweaked to show trans gear and shit errors! to bad its to late to go terrorize the neighbor hood open header since the down pipe is out right now haha

welp got the exhaust re install(no more exhaust leak btw, sounds mint) got the scanner goin andthe pcm shows all shifts happening, lugs into 2nd when the pcms shows the 3-4 shift. anyone have any thoughts?

im thinking it may be time to call TOD on the trans :/

Sign up on the lt1ls1 website. Tons of trans info there and there seems to be some great knowledge on these 4L60E transmissions. I've been hanging out there so I can just build the trans in my 01 Tahoe when it goes as I don't trust tranny shops.

yea ive got a thread going over there, thats where im at with shops too.

also it seems ive developed a sudden massive oil leak from the pack of the motor. my theory is the gm oil press. sender blew up, but i cant see it since ive got harness in the way. and its now misfireing again :/

I'm not real familiar with the LS based engines and I'm honestly not a fan of the factory piston knock they come with but they seem to hold up ok. Check by the oil filter, there is a gasketed connection to the oil pan that is leaking on my Tahoe, not sure what that is for, oil pump passage maybe?

no its not that, i checked.

its comming from the top and leaking on the transs and dripping midd way down the trans pan, definatly motor oil

Lower intake manifold leaking? If it was a real sbc (non LS based) the rear/front seals under the intake can leak. On those I use a big fat line of rtv instead of seals to eliminate the problem. Not sure how the LS are configured. Other than that sometimes the factory used small core plugs(freeze plugs) to seal the drilled oil passages in the block. Gmpp engines come this way, I tap the hole for pipe plugs and can those mini freeze plugs.

it was the oil pressure sender, the plastic grenaded and oil was gushing out on the the trans.

unscrewed it from the head drilled it out and tapped it to 1/4npt then plugged it with a 1/4 pipe plug, no more leakage.

pulled the trans pan again today to look over things. fluid was pretty dark with grime on the bottom of the pan. bolted the pan up, added 4 fresh quarts, no change.

gonna drive it to a shop in the morning and let them give me a definitive answer on the trans. my guess is a burned up 2/4 band and bad 3/4 clutches

Those seem to be the common culprits in those trannies besides the sun shell and input sprag. I'd get advice from dynamic396 from the lt1ls1 site and try to build it yourself. Trannies are not that hard to build, it's getting all the correct clearances and updates done that can be hard since everyone has their opinions on what's best. The sonnax website would be your best friend.

not sure i want to try an build it my self. i think ill just make it worse. thinking of doing a salvage yard trans

i think the sunshell is good since i have a strong reverse

I was just mentioning they are a weak link. These trannies are weak unless built so I would not trust a junkyard unit unless it's under 100k on it. You did a 5.3 swap so I bet if you get an atsg guide and a build and modify HP book you can do it. I'd pick dynamic396 brain for clearances and which mods to do. Like servos, bands, sun shell, etc...

I did my 4L60E with a bit of help from a transmission guru buddy. I put all the available upgrade parts in it too. Its doable but you sort of have to have an idea of what is going on. I've done a couple autos before. Even with a manual I still made a mistake and put the sprag in backwards and had to pull it and tear it down.

I'd rather do it myself, learn, possibly make mistakes and do it again before trusting most tranny shops. Plus you could build it 2 or 3 times for what they charge. Most shops just replace the obviously bad stuff and don't know about actually building the tranny correctly.

i think i may go full retard and try and do it my self, ive got a performance rebuild kit in my cart at gm transmission parts. along with a rebuilt valve body with the sonnax TCC valve upgrade

I suggest getting a quality rebuilt converter from someone like Art Carr, or one of the many performance converter houses. Check with the guys on lt1ls1 site for recommendations. I recommend taking pics as you disassemble and lay parts in groups so you know what goes where. Inspect accumulators and their bores thoroughly along with servos, both of which should also be updated. Get your running clearances from the guys on the lt1ls1/LS1 site. I believe the 3/4 clutch should be less clearance than specified in the book and same with the band to servo pin. This helps the 2/3 shift not flare. I'd pm dynamic396 and see if he can help with specs or one of the other trans builders over there.

I have a manual on my site you can download:
http://sawtoothent.com/?page_id=533

thanks, ive skimmed it a bit.

got a local guy where i can pick up a rebuilt unit with a core for 650. thinking i may do that.

i mean the TPS is reading properly, my scanner show the pcm going into all 4 gears yet drives in 1st all the way thru 3500 rpm, then kinda lugs into second after backing all the way off the throttle, i cant get it to shift manually, fluid is pretty dirty despite how much fresh fluid ive added, heres a couple pics from when i dropped the pan a couple days ago.

im not an expert but im thinking the trans is no good right? based on my reading im guessing the 2-4 band is shot along with the 3/4 clutches, plus that looks like flecks of friction material in the pan to me

Yeah something isn't right dude. If its not nice and pink something is wrong. $650 for a rebuilt unit is pretty good. You're going to spend that much on parts if you buy all the upgraded stuff for it like the hardened sun shell etc.... Plus its a lot less work and probably comes with a warranty of some sort. I'd say do it if you can swing it... Make sure you flush your cooler out before hooking the new trans to it.

also the fuel tank vent mod is definatly worth 26 gallons

there was arouns a gallon or so in the tank when i filled it

i was then promptly rewarded the next day with a leaking return line fitting in the tank...so i have to wait till i run down half a tank so i can pull the sender and fiddle with it

That's always fun :) I love the feeling of gas running down to my elbow :)
