96 xj sport 5.3 swap

It's nice to read all this info before swapping stuff. Picked up a complete 2001 5.3 for a great deal. I want a manual trans if I swap in my MJ, otherwise it will go in my XJ with a 4L60e

... AA adapter is leaking :'( lsxj initiation tradition lives on

Welcome to the club :)

I have a spare speedo gear laying around. I can check what tooth it is if you want. If it will work I'll send it to you

good luck on yours, are you going to do a thread? my votes on the mj!

sounds like a plan, ive got a couple from tire changes and gear changes

as far as the leak, im waiting to see if i need to yank the trans first, dont want to fix that to have to pull the trans anyways

hey jess, you seem to no something about the 4l60e, have any idea what would cause the trans to stay in first?

everything i seem to read blames the vss but tourque app says im getting a reading, then people blame the TPS but the tps is reading normal after i screwed it in properly.

im sad to admit the auto transmissions are a mystery to me

I'm still sort of a novice at these but everything I am reading is either TPS or VSS as well... assuming your trans is in good shape internally. A couple people said that the 2-4 band could be shot or possibly shift solenoid B is bad.

How many miles on the trans?
Is the VSS new?

I know FrankZ had a problem with using the wrong VSS in his and he had trouble with it before he switched to a late model version.

I'll hit my transmission buddy up tomorrow and see what he says.

Coincidentally I'm having an issue with mine right now too. I double checked the shifter travel and the cable and it manually shifts all the way to 1st but stays in 2nd gear. Shifts fine 1-4 when in drive. Haven't figured that one out yet either :)

im using the vss that came with the AA adapter, new unit

supposedly 80k on the trans

about 8 quarts of new fluid

im going to take her for a spin in the morning an see whats if its better

Sorry for the simple questions.... is it showing full on the dipstick? Checked when warm and idling? A complete drain/refill is about 12qts.

yup it was right where it should be when i took it for a spin the first time, its leaked out a decent amount, check at the appropriate time and warmth.

ive pulled the vss and cleened it off, made sure it was connected properly. firmly connected the main trans connector.

How far from the AA speedo ring is the sensor? I had mine too far away at first and it gave harsh readings and wouldn't shift right. I think AA wants the sensor to be .010" away from the ring...I used a feeler gauge.

that i dont know, i have to pull the case to fix the leak any way so ill check it then.

started cleening up the rest of the mess of wires tonight, and getting it all loomed and routed properly, gonna pull the trans pan soon and check the shift solenoids and 1-2 accumulator, and change the filter/ add some more fresh fluid/check for other garbage in the pan if there is any.

the fluid leaking out of the case look pretty dark for just having added almost 8-10 quarts of fluid.

pulled the pan/ drained the fluid. fluid looks awful dark considering i added quite a bit of fluid.

i ohmed out the shift solenoids and they tested good, checked the 1-2 acumulator springs/housing and it was all in good shape, checked all connections inside the trans.

going to change the filter again and refill with fresh fluid and hopefully get a real scanner on it thursday to see whats going on. based on the fluid color i dont have high hopes but we will see i guess

If I can find a matching manual trans for a good price, MJ is the plan. Although, I may also have a line on a complete lq4. If that happens, the quickest method will be to swap the 5.3/auto in the XJ. And will give me an excuse to search more for a manual trans to mate with the lq4 in the MJ.

THATS THE DREAM, not on but 2 ls powered jeeps.

hooked the jeep to a legit snap-on scanner today and electronically the trans seems fine.

refilled the trans with fresh fluid and no change

not sure what im going to do at this point, considering throwing a 5 speed in it but the bell-housing and kit is more than a rebuilt auto. my ddads gonna chatt with a couple buddies of his and see if he can find me a trust worthy transmission guy to check it over before i scrap the trans

My transmission buddy said the same thing we are seeing online with the TPS or VSS. Not much help....

That sucks man. Hopefully someone can diagnose it for you

grrr. that just bugs me cause i know both of them are working properly. we even commanded everything one with the scanner ans it all came on, but no shift

i just want to make sure its the internals not some thing electronic that i can fix

If you can find a 4wd drive gm manual trans that was in a 01-up then it shou d be plug n pray.

ok so i got the trans to shift into 3rd on its own today after dealing with another misfire(bad power to coil plug bank 2)

i went for a spin to see if it would do anything and once it got to 35 or so(3500rpm ish) it shifted with me feathering the throttle

any suggestions?

the shift solenoids ohmed out with in range, everything is plugged in, 1-2 accumulator springs/piston is in good shape.
