90 XJ seat help

Here's one for the books. My bone stock, 90 Jeep Cherokee XJ, which just turned 291,000, finally gave up the ghost on the factory seats.
The Grey cloth & vinyl driver's seat, which has been leaning back for awhile, finally broke the welds on the seat back, and is now in two pieces. I hate to
part with the matching upholstery, but I am puzzled if it's worth saving the seat by trying to weld the seat support halves together, in a permanent position? Has anyone else attempted this fix, or able to support my quest for another driver's seat? Locally would be fine, but I don't mind paying for shipping. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just trying to get to 300,000 miles...

Why not skin the upholstery off your old seat, get another used seat, then put the upholstery onto that frame? The lower seat "bun" comes off with 4 bolts - you don't have to separate the foam and fabric at all. The upper part should pull right off by removing the release latch (roll pin thru the plastic lever) and then there's some white flexible plastic pinch clip thing that you just pull off the underside of the seat back, then skin it.

I'm pretty sure I still have the old seat frames from my '85 that had the deep side bolsters..... They're in great shape, you're welcome to them for free if ya want to come get 'em down in Littleton.

Otherwise, I'd just look for some used XJ seats and re-skin 'em.

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate the assitance. I might be interested in your seat frames; I'm located in near Littleton, also. My e-mail address is posted in the member's section. Please drop me a line, if you could accomodate me. When would be a good time to see the frames?

I was unaware the seats separate from the frames that easily. I also heard from another owner that the driver's seat and the passenger seat is a direct swap, except for the base. Am I correct in this thinking?

Thanks again, Yellaheep.

Not exactly. The seat bottom is because it bolts to the base. The seat back could be swapped, but if you have the recline adj. lever or 2dr seats with the shoulder lever, then you'd have issues with holes in the side vinyl. Seat frames are not interchangeable because of the above mentioned levers.

Ya dig?

Sorry, couldn't find where your e-mail was posted. You need to activate your Private Message option in "User CP" so we can PM ya.

I reversed drivers and passenger seats on my old 90 2door. Yes the recline lever and fold down levers were all wrong, but since it was my DD to work I didn't care.
